Sometimes a couple comes in to let me know their struggles seemed to have emerged a while ago when one of the partners suggested therapy but the other wasn’t able to focus on it at the time. It is often the case that now when they finally come in the partner who had suggested they seek help in the first place has by now already affectively checked out. Unfortunately more often than not this seems to be a particularly gendered (as well as cultural and generation) experience predicated on the pernicious notion that men and people in committed relationships shouldn’t need help. Sadly, not having accessed support earlier seems to correlate very highly with heartbreaking grief and loss...
