Fiat Farm 08.10.2020

We have a new guard chicken, who has taken post by our front door, in our flower box. She sounds like a pterodactyl whenever anyone gets close! Here’s what is actually going on: a few weeks ago a few hens decided they would deliver their eggs right to our door each day by laying in our flower box. Since then this hen has gone broody. She’s laying on several eggs thinking they’re going to hatch. They won’t hatch, of course, because they’re not fertilized. But her instincts are strong! She’s been here all day and night, save for a short period when we assume she goes to eat and drink a little something, for almost a week!

This is a very exciting day at Fiat Farm! Almost 4 years ago, the year we arrived here, we planted 160 apple, pear and plum trees in what we dreamed would one day be our orchard. Our trees didn’t seem to do so well in the first years... we started to give up hope. And then, today, Eden found our first harvest of apples! We are SO excited!!

Got out for my first careful stroll to the pond since I broke my big toe tonight. It poured rain here several times throughout the day, and made a huge difference in the pond’s water level! The kids have all seen frogs in the pond, and one of them even thinks he saw a turtle! Who knew digging a hole and then watching it fill with water and life would be so exciting!!

As a follow up to yesterday’s post: I got all good news from the orthopaedic surgeon this morning! I don’t need surgery, I can bare weight on my foot again (but not yet on my toes), and I’ll be all healed up in 3 weeks! Woot!! Thank you for all the prayers and well-wishes, and thanks again to all those who helped us out in these first days, giving me a chance to start the healing process off well! Now to pace myself, and remember that my foot isn’t healed yet.

You haven’t heard from us lately because Farmer Meghann broke her big toe in 2 places falling down the stairs into her basement about 10 days ago. This has been especially inconvenient at 30 weeks pregnant. I’m normally the one who takes the day to day pictures of the farm happenings (not the really great pictures taken by Jenna Gernon Photography!), but am obviously pretty limited getting around the property these days. Tomorrow I get to see the orthopaedic surgeon, and am hoping for great news! In the meantime, I’d like to thank all those who have been supporting us so that we can continue doing all the things that need doing on the farm and in our life. It takes a village at the best of times, but even more so with these sorts of unexpected challenges. #bettertogether

Here is our eldest son, William, in the boat he saved up and bought this week, and our eldest daughter Eden, with the cats she so lovingly cares for. We are so proud of these two hard working kids, and so thankful for all the ways they help out around the farm. There is something truly extraordinary about their ordinariness. How special it is that they’ve embraced this farm life with us!

Despite the lack of rain, the pond continues to fill and the pumpkins are growing. Also, it feels like Easter all year round when we find new stashes of hidden eggs!!

The Fiat Farm Farmers’ staycation was a success! We spent plenty of time together making memories, ate some delicious food, and even got some rest in. The tree house now has some walls, and a slide Farmer Nic salvaged at least 7 years ago! We’re all a little sad that Daddy has to go back to work tomorrow, but so grateful for the time we’ve had together. We’re extra thankful that there’s still lots of summer to creatively enjoy.

We made a video to share a tour of the pond! Pictures don’t do it justice and it’s been such an exciting learning opportunity to watch this project unfold. Who knew that putting in a pond involves more than simply digging a hole? We look forward to sharing more updates!

The pond is slowly filling up, and the treehouse coming along! It’s been a good day!
