Happy Birthday March babies! Here's some FUN FACTS about your birthstone Aquamarine: Aquamarine gets its name from Latin "aqua marina" which means "sea water." It references the similarity of the gemstones color and clarity to that of the ocean. Decorative jewelry and protective amulets using aquamarine have been found that date back as far as 500 B.C. It has been used for its great beauty and for its powers of healing, especially the ability to calm and sooth the nerves.... Believed to be a precious treasure from mermaids, sailors have worn aquamarine amulets to keep them safe at sea and ward off seasickness. This pendant is from Stuller (item 85424) shown with a sky blue topaz and 17 genuine Aquamarines set in sterling silver.

Aquamarine is the birthstone for March. This beautiful blue stone comes in a variety of aquatic shades. The most common is a pale, almost clear blue; reminiscent of a glimmering sea on a sunny day.

It is February and a perfect time to feature a world famous amethyst piece of jewellery! Commissioned in 1947 by the Duchess, Cartier designed the Draperie necklace in an Indian-inspired style. It features 29 step-cut amethysts, turquoise cabochons and brilliant-cut diamonds, from which a large heart-shaped amethyst is dropped in the front. Set in gold, the gemstones are suspended by a very strong gold rope-like chain. The Duke of Windsor chose all the gemstones except for the turquoise. The Duchess debuted this breathtaking piece in June 1953. In a strapless gown, she wore the necklace and the matching earrings to the Gala a lOrangerie ball in Versailles. The necklace was later sold at a Sothebys Geneva auction in 1987 for $605,000 after the Duchesss death in 1986.

Happy Birthday to my February friends! Some FUN FACTS about the February birthstone Amethyst. That lovely purple shading is what gives amethyst its common name. Ancient Greeks thought it looked rather like wine, and from there flights of fancy took off and led them (and the Romans) to think that maybe the gem could be used to ward off drunkenness. So, they named it amethystos, the Greek word for "not intoxicated." People would wear jewellery made from it, or drink from glasses carved from it. Chances are they got drunk regardless, but at least they did so in style.
