Today we heard from Premier Brian Pallister that gyms can remain open at 25% capacity, but everyone must be 3 metres apart. We have measured our studio and our capacity will remain the same as it did prior to this announcement, and in studio personal training sessions will continue. A reminder to all clients coming into the building for classes to keep 3 metres apart not just in the studio, but in the lobby as well. Masks are mandatory at all times. ... Struggling with your balance?? Fifty 5 Fitness Personal Trainer & Fitness Instructor Vanessa @vckpilates has a tip for you! I am the first person to admit that balance is a struggle. I know it comes naturally to some people, but I am not one of those people! Because of that I've had to pick up a few tricks along the way, and I'm happy to share them with you. Balance is a full body exercise that starts with your feet . A great way to improve your balance then, is... to improve the position of your feet and the muscle activation up your legs that comes with it. Start with your feet hip distance apart, toes pointing forwards. Without changing the actual position of your foot, twist your feet into the floor as if you were trying to turn your toes out. You should feel the arch of your foot get stronger (or maybe the arch will appear, for those of us with flat feet!), as well as muscles in the outside of your ankle and shin, around the knees, and on the outsides of your hips fire up. This will give a strong, solid base to move from. It's a trick I use with general balance exercises, as well as squats , lunges and deadlifts, to make sure that I'm starting out in a good position to get the maximum benefit from each exercise. I suggest trying it barefoot on a grippy surface to start! See more

CHEERS TO A NEW YEAR !! Looking back on 2020, and all the craziness that went on, some good came out of it for Fifty 5 Fitness: Due to the pandemic, we were forced to start taping online classes, and now have viewers across & .... We created 3 new classes during 2020: The 55 Core & Mobility, The 55 Step & The 55 for Men. We hired 4 new Instructors: Sam @sam.scribilo , Kelsey @kgmcsthilaire , Karen @karenduha & Craig, and Colleen @colleenwasyliw came on board as our Office Manager. Adhartas Physical Therapy @adhartasphysicaltherapy @thepegphysio @at.kalynn moved in, and started accepting patients. Vanessa @vckpilates became a certified Personal Trainer, and alongside Emily & Erica, she started accepting new training clients. The plans were laid out... In December of 2019, I knew I was going to be taking over the lease at 8-960 Lorimer Blvd, but hadn’t signed on the dotted line yet. The lease papers were being drawn up, which would take time... Flash forward 3 months, and Winnipeg was entering into a pandemic. I still hadn’t signed my lease papers yet, so I had a choice to make. ... Many friends and family members told me I was crazy to enter into a lease during a pandemic. Stay as an online gym, look for new commercial space when the pandemic is over, and close Fifty 5 Fitness down and get back to a regular 9-5 job. My brain was telling me to shut it all down and move on, but my heart & gut told me otherwise...and I went with it. To say this year was a challenge is an understatement. This year was the most stressful year of my life, filled with moments of panic attacks, headaches, days filled with tears and worry....BUT, I would not change it for anything! This year was the year that I grew as a better person & business owner. 2020, you taught me: 1 To ALWAYS follow my GUT instinct. If I hadn’t, Fifty 5 Fitness would have been shut down, and not thriving like it is today. 2 That thing called help...ask for it!! The day that I hired @colleenwasyliw as our Office Manager I cried tears of happiness. It was one of the best things I did in 2020! 3 Even though you own a small business, and you can literally have your laptop open and work every second of the day, learn to schedule in BREAKS and time for YOU! Finally learned this towards the end of this year. 4 And the BIGGEST thing the pandemic taught me about was RESILIENCY. I have had to pick myself up after many set backs throughout this year, and I am stronger because of it. A BIG thank you to my staff for also being so resilient throughout this year! They all adapted to the changes so well, and did so with such grace and professionalism. And the BIGGEST thank you goes out to our clients for sticking with us through the good and bad times of this year. As we all heard from the Premier this morning, Manitoba is moving into Critical - CODE RED. This means that as of Thursday November 12, our studio doors will be closed. BUT, even though our doors are closing, we KEEP MOVING! As of Thursday, ALL of our in-studio classes will be on Zoom. All personal training will be done on Zoom as well. ... Registration is still happening for our winter session that begins on Nov 23. Are you getting the most out of your breath? Most people don't breathe deeply enough to get the maximum amount of energy and support that the act of breathing has to offer. To maximize your breath capacity, think three-dimensions and six-directions. Up and Down 1Up: On your inhale, you want to feel yourself getting taller as your upper chest moves slightly upwards. On your exhale the chest falls gently down again. 2 Down: On your inhale your pelvic floor relaxes a...nd sinks slightly down. On your exhale it gently contracts and pulls in and up towards the belly. Right and Left 3 Right: On your inhale the sides of your ribcage expand as the ribs move apart from each other. On your exhale they pull back towards each other. 4 Left: Same as the right. See if you use both lungs equally by checking whether your ribcage expands the same amount in both directions. Front to Back 5 Front: On your inhale, your chest, ribs and belly all lift to create space for the incoming air. On your exhale the chest and belly fall as the abs contract and the ribcage pulls together and down in front. 6 Back: On your inhale, the back of your ribcage expands so that if you lie on your back you feel more skin surface contact the ground. On your exhale the ribs pull in towards each other so that some of your skin leaves the ground. I like to use a resistance band and a mirror to do a self-check and see how Three Dimensional and Six Directional my breathing is. Try it!Let us know what you see! See more

Ever wonder about your CORE, and what muscles consist of it? Our Fifty 5 Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer Vanessa is here to explain: This is one of my favourite exercises for core, but to do it right is harder than you might think. One definition of "core" uses the analogy of an apple. The "core" of the apple is the most central part. This definition says that our "core muscles" are our deepest muscles In this definition, the only way to activate your core ...is through your breath, taking deep breaths that fill your lungs on the inhale and empty your lungs on the exhale. A second definition references the skeleton. The human skeleton is divided into two parts. The axial skeleton includes your skull, spine, pelvis, sternum and ribs, all the bones that surround and protect your major organs. The appendicular skeleton consists of bones in your limbs. This definition says that any muscle that attaches to your axial skeleton is a core muscle. With this one, you activate your core by stabilizing the non-moving parts of your body. So if I'm sliding my foot out, I stabilize my pelvis with my core. The third definition references your fascia, the connective tissue that holds your entire body together. Think of an orange, that thick layer of "white stuff" under the peel, the membrane that divides the orange into slices, and the membranes that divide the slices into droplets. Your body has something similar. This definition says that your muscles are connected to each other with this tissue, and force moves from one muscle to another through it. Your "core" is a pathway of muscle and fascia that transmits force or energy from the bottom of your foot all the way up to the top of your head. This definition looks at direction of movement, points of contact and transmission of force as ways to activate your "core". So. With all of that, what am I doing in this exercise? I'm taking a deep breath into the bottom of my lungs, stabilizing my shoulder blade, ribcage and pelvis, and then using an exhale to guide the movement of opposite arm and leg. 1 LEGGED SQUAT PROGRESSION AT HOME We had fun with this 1 legged squat exercise in the Thursday 9:30am The 55 + BALANCE class this morning. If you have been doing squats all the time, but need something more challenging...its time to progress to 1 leg !... Find yourself a kitchen chair and stand in front of it with your feet hips distance apart (you can always bump the back of the chair up against a wall if you are scared of it moving along the floor). PROGRESSION #1: Lift one foot up, and keep it lifted up while trying to sit down on the chair using one leg AND HANDS. Stand back up using BOTH feet. PROGRESSION #2: Do the same as #1, but now with your hands clasped in front of you. PROGRESSION #3: Now try and sit down & STAND UP with 1 leg ONLY. Once progression #3 becomes too easy, you would try without the chair. And if that becomes too easy, then it’s time to grab some dumbbells and weight it up. Where are you in this progression?? Today we had to say goodbye to such a well loved Fifty 5 Fitness staff member. Tier @tierannaimailin taught her last in-studio class for us this morning. She is one busy lady, and will be devoting her time now to her studies in Radiation Therapy at the University of Winnipeg. Throughout the 3 years that Tier has worked for Fifty 5 Fitness, she has been pretty incredible! Her classes were always fantastic, she made relationships with every client that walked ...through the door, she was impeccably organized, and brought energy and excitement to every class she taught! Our studio doors were closed for 4 months back in March. With the support of our clients, we were able to re-open our doors in July. As we heard from Roussin today, all gyms will have to reduce their capacity to 25% as of Monday, November 2nd. Even though we have to reduce our capacity, this will not stop us from MOVING!... As of Monday, November 2nd, all of our in-studio classes will be flipped to online ZOOM classes (as per our Fall Session policies, outlined on our website), except for the following classes that have less than 25% capacity: Tuesday 5:15pm The 55 Core & Mobility Wednesday 10:45am The 55 Barre Saturday 11:15am The 55 Kettlebells Sunday 10:30am The 55 + Balance Personal Training sessions will remain in-studio (unless already rearranged on Zoom per the clients request). WATER BOTTLE WEDNESDAY If you are stuck at home through this pandemic, and having a hard time finding weights, fill up some water bottles, and give this exercise a try! WATER BOTTLE HALOS ... Give strength to your shoulders while you increase your mobility in the upper back. 1 Fill up a water bottle and hold it by the ends. Bring your arms up so they are in a 90 degree bend. Wrists and elbows inline, elbow and shoulders inline. 2 Try to slowly circle the water bottle around your head, while keeping your elbows tucked close to the sides of your face. See if over time, you can get your elbows to point up towards the ceiling as you circle. 3 While the arms are circling around your head, focus on keeping your core tight. Don’t let your hips move all around (no hula dancing haha). 4 Try and do 10 halos to the right, and then 10 to the left. Take a 30 sec break and then repeat. Have fun, and hydrate yourself when you are done! Have a great Wednesday!! See more

My name is Karen Duha and I look forward to sharing my passion for fitness with all of you! If you knew me well, you would know that I love an active lifestyle- downhill skiing with my family, cycling with my husband, and tennis with my friends, just to name a few. On my journey I have learned that training for fitness has allowed me to enjoy these pleasures in life. I am a true believer that although we can’t stop the aging process, we can certainly slow it down by adding fitness training to our daily routine. I have a degree in Recreation Studies and worked at St. Boniface Hospital until I started my family. I have taken several fitness courses over the years through Manitoba Fitness Council and the YMCA/YWCA. WEDNESDAY WATER BOTTLE WORKOUT LYING UPPER BACK FLYS An important part of the body to work as we age, to help with our posture and balance. ... 1 Start by coming down on to your mat with your two water bottles. Place each water bottle on either side of your mat. 2 Lie down on your stomach on the mat. 3 Extend your arms out to the side (with palms down) at shoulder height, and grab your water bottles. 4 Keeping your shoulders drawn down away from your ears , and body heavy to the floor, lift your arms straight up and lower down. 5 Pretend there is a pencil between your shoulder blades, and try and squeeze the pencil every time you draw your arms up. Try 3 sets of 10 reps. For more of a challenge, try and pulse up for 10 seconds at the end of your tenth rep. Enjoy!! See more

Today the province announced it will be increasing Winnipeg’s restriction levels to ORANGE as of Monday, September 28th. But how does this affect fitness facilities? According to Dr. Roussin, this order does NOT change the group sizes currently permitted in fitness facilities. ... So at FIFTY 5 FITNESS we will continue to: Enter the facility doors with a mask on, and continue to wear it until we have reached our mat with our equipment. Sanitize our hands before and after class. Physically distance ourselves by 2 metres with all clients and staff. Limit our class sizes to 12 members per class. Before opening Fifty 5 Fitness I spent many years as a Dance Instructor. Throughout my years dancing and teaching, I visited Physiotherapists off and on with injuries. My experience with Physiotherapy was always the same. I would come in to the curtained room, get heat and cold put on me while the Therapist would leave the room. They would then come back and put electrodes on me, and leave the room. Lastly they would show me a few exercises that I would do at home. They... would have me come back weekly until the issue was resolved. BUT...the issues would always creep back over time. It was not until I had an appointment with @adhartasphysicaltherapy that I found physical therapy could be different! Iain @thepegphysio , the Owner of @adhartasphysicaltherapy takes a different approach. An approach that is brain-body based, and makes 100% to me and my Kinesiology background. It is Iain’s belief that therapy should be fun, inclusive, and centred completely around you and your goals. WEDNESDAY WATER BOTTLE WORKOUT Have you found dumbbells anywhere in the city lately? I know with COVID, dumbbells are hard to come by! Many of our ONLINE clients have been using water bottles or soup cans as weights because of it. In this video, I will show you how to work your tricep muscle with water bottles. Yes, that part of your arm that waves in the air when you don’t want it to . Let’s tighten that sucker up:... 1 Grab your water bottles and stand with your feet hips distance apart. 2 Hinge forward, making sure your head is inline with your spine (making a straight line from the top of the head to the tailbone). 3 Make sure your gaze is at the floor, but your chin is off of your chest. 4 Row your water bottles up so that your fists are at the side of your chest. This is your starting position. 5 Extend the arms behind you, getting them nice and high away from your seat. Then hinge at the elbow to come back to your starting position. Try 15 repetitions, and then try keeping the arms extended and pulsing the water bottles up for 15 sec! Repeat 3 times through. Once you do get a hold of a set of weights heavier than your water bottles, try doing 8-10 repetitions with your heavier load (repeat 3 times through). Now take a sip of that water , and congratulate yourself for doing something good for your body today! Stay tuned next Wednesday for another WATER BOTTLE WORKOUT! See more

Emily is gearing up to take the @zhealth_performance Balance Gym course (thanks to @thepegphysio’s recommendation). She hopes to gain new knowledge and ideas for balance in THE 55 + BALANCE classes. @zhealth_performance talks about not only moving your body while trying to balance, but also moving your head and eyes . Today in the Tuesday 9:30am class we tried our heel to toe walks forward and back, but added in looking side to side every time you take a step. ... It is harder than it looks. Elizabeth is doing a great job in this video! Try it out at home , and see how much more challenging the exercise becomes when moving the head and eyes side to side. Good luck! See more

Last week we showcased a few upper body exercises that we have been doing in our fall session classes. Today, Sandi is showing you some of the lower body exercises we did in THE 55 + BALANCE class this afternoon (see the video version on Instagram @fifty5fitness ) 1 Travelling squats to work the quads, glutes and hamstrings.... 2 Dumbbell Deadlifts to strengthen the hamstrings, glutes and lower back. Sandi has the weight behind her back to help keep her spine in a neutral position. 3 Banded side leg lifts with a knee raise to work the glute medius (side of seat), quad and hip flexor. All of these exercises can be modified to suit your fitness level . We still have a few spots available in the fall session classes.
