Do you have a son or daughter leaving home and heading to live in residence at university or college in September? If so, you may be interested in learning more about what I learned (and my reflections as a mom and psychologist) during my daughters first year away. Ive written about our experiences - social, academic, emotional and practical, before, during and after year one and share this in my latest book being released in May. If youd like me to come to speak about h...ow to navigate this transition and the year, to you and other parents at your son or daughters school, please write to me at helpmesara@sympatico,ca with the name and contact info of the parent council chair (or person who handles these kinds of events) and I will follow up by sending them more information. I cant wait to help prepare you for the journey thats to come ...

Cataracts typically form in ones forties but are not usually significant. Its not until ones sixties that they may begin to cause vision problems. But, with a history of eye complications, it was of no surprise that I began to form cataracts earlier than most. At the age of 56, with a large cataract in my right eye, I was advised to have it removed. As I learned, when a cataract is removed, the lens of the eye is also removed and replaced with an IOL lens (Intra Ocular Lens)...Continue reading

If youre over fifty and not yet had a colonoscopy because youre either afraid of a) the horrenous prep that everyone talks about b) the idea of being "put to sleep", c) the results or d) all of the above, know that you are not alone! However, like many things in life that were anxious about, this is one of those things that is important to confront head on, feeling the fear but doing it anyway. I had my 2nd colonoscopy a couple of hours ago and here I am, on a high knowing t...hat it is over and that polyps that can turn cancerous, have been removed. Here are some tips to make the before, during and after easier: Before See if your doc advises the dulcolax and pico salax prep. This is so much easier than having to consume copious amounts of liquid on an empty stomach Stock up on clear chicken soup (lots of nutrients), gatorade (not orange or red or purple), clear apple juice, jello (also no reddish colours), ginger ale, tea (clear) and popsicles (also no reddish colours. I bought a delicious lemon flavoured ice popsicle by Frutare). I poured the soup in a mug and drank it like tea. I also "ate" or drank almost every hour which kept my blood sugar regulated, my headaches mostly at bay and my hunger reduced. I stayed at home and cleared my calendar so that I didnt have to exert more energy than clicking the TV converter. I went to sleep earlier the night before knowing that i had to get up at 430am to take the second sachet of pico. I was even able to go back to sleep after During Dont be alarmed if your blood pressure is elevated in advance. Anxiety will do that Make sure you are in a reputable hospital/clinic and that you trust the medical professionals that will be administering the procedure and care When on the table about to receive the dose of sedative, I decided to say the words "let it go" to encourage myself to go with the process rather than fighting it One of my best friends who is a nurse had assured me that there are drugs that will easily reverse a sedative or anaesthetic which made me feel less anxious about not waking up, which is a normal fear When they put the warm blanket on top of me prior to the procedure, I tried to enjoy the warmth and to relax further After The sedative was so light that I actually woke up about 5 minutes before it was over. I was glad that my anaesthiologist had forewarned me that this may happen. They offered to top me off but I was in absolutely no pain or discomfort and was even able to talk to them although I dont remember a lot of what I said They removed 3 small polyps. Down one from last time. Clear your calendar for this day too if you can. Unlike prep day, you can really relax! Im so grateful to have access to this procedure as a preventative measure and encourage you to have one if youre over 50 and havent already done so.

Many women in their "fifty plus" chapter of life experience a period of inner reflection a time to consider what youve accomplished and what to do next. No longer carpooling kids to extra-curriculars or in the midst of feeling the need to prove yourself, but not quite ready to retire completely or able to experience freedom for extended periods of time. If you, or someone you know of would be interested in participating, please either click the learn more button on this page, and/or share this post. You will benefit from the camaraderie and support of other women in the same zone! Please like this page for more details on upcoming events. Looking forward to connecting.
