I saw a post on FB this morning by a woman that was extremely well thought out and prepared. And not quite accurate! People who are "greening" their lives have ...been switching to non-chemical cleaners of all types. For instance, vinegar is becoming commonly used to clean countertops. And this morning's post was about peroxide as a "germ killer". Both videgar and peroxide have drawbacks. They are greeen, for sure, so that is not the drawback. In truth, neither kill all types of germs (bacteria) and they are also not effective grease cutters either. Don't worry though, as you do not require BLEACH (chlorine) or AMMONIA to both kill bacteria and cut grease. So you can effectively clean without harming your familly with these toxic chemical products. Very effectively, I might add. So, to share the science (and the truth) I am posting more accurately. Just understand that I am not a scientist oir researcher so all I can do is provide a simplified explanation. I know a Direct Selling company that sells a natural surfectant that is wild at cleaning grease & used by those who buy it to clean counters and dishes. Terrific product but it does not get all types of germs (more accurately referred to as; bacteria). I used this product for years until I discovered another piece of information. If only this stuff was mandatory learning in school. But that would mean governments would hurt major manufactruers of disinifectant products, so don't expect this kind of learning to be oferred any time soon (lobbyists would find someone else to fund & elect if any politician tried this). Of course, you could use peroxide and another ingredient or product combinned to do the job in a two step process. Same with vinegar. Alone neither get it done safely. The key (again, I am a layman but I do understand this) is there are two main types of bacteria. Aerobic and anerobic. These are easily described as; one requiring oxygen to survive, and; the other not requiring it. And this is where my explanation gets a little mirky. The woman's post this morning mentioend that peroxide swiched in your mouth kills bacteria. Correct. But not both the bad types of bacteria that live there!!!! Various bateria actually contain called 'catalase' which breaks down peroxide into its elements, water and oxygen. Thus rendering it ineffective at killing the bacteria itself! One of the bacteria that does this is known in its short form as 'Staph' and is nasty. It can and does hurt our immune system and sometimes makes people quite sick. And it can live outside of the body for a time, like on countertops!! So, if you care about yourself and your family please do not use peroxide on its own to disinfect your countertops and if you are 'disinfecting' your mouth swish salt water after peroxide to "get 'er done" .. !! Who knew? Of couse, peroxide and salt water treatment would still leave countertops greasy. So for cleaning we still do not have an effective solution. You now have choices. If you want to clean wiuthout using caustic chemicals you need two elementsto actually accompish this. That means you have to do at least two steps to clean or buy a product where both are in one. I favor three ingredients in a cleaner, not two. As you will see. A minor amount of natural surfectant (think soap) added to an essential oil and a natural acid is enough to effectively kill germs and clean grease. And one of the bext acids is squeezed lemon peals (citric acid). The essential oil and the natural acid kill both types of bacteria effectively ... very, actually. And the soap lifts grease off of countertips and stove tops. If you do not want to squeeze out sufficent citic acid from orange and lemon peels every time you clean your counter you can buy a 100% green product that is prepared and it is way less money than a brand name disinfectant too. I will stop at that. Anyone who wants to know a source for such a green product can reach out to me. Have a great day.
