I was having a conversation this morning with my parents about why in addition to contributing for our children’s future education, we also invest for them and this is how I broke down the strategy for my toddler who is only 3. 1. At her birth, invest $10,000 in an investment account that yields on average 10% ( yes yes it’s possible, been doing... it for years now) and buy shares! 2. Committed to add as little as $100 PER YEAR into that account and invest that as well. 3. Adding that $100 per year for 18 years of her life gives you an additional contribution of $1800 that you have added to your initial investment of 10K at her birth. 4. At her 18th birthday, plan on telling her you are now a young adult and working. Know that you have an investment account that mommy and daddy have been contributing to since your birth, It’s time for you now to be the one to contribute $100 per year. There is only 2 rules to this investment account: 1. You cannot take out money until you are 65 years old and 2. You must continue to contribute $100 per year until you’re 65. PS: #mamabear still monitors it until ... I want to lol child I don’t care if you’re 40 lol. 5. Our Financially Savvy Girl all grown up does exactly that and contributes $100 per year into this account from age 18-65. Note: keep in mind this won’t be her only investment portfolioobut I’m derailing let’s get back to the subject at bar. 6. At the age of 65, the total contribution of $100 since birth is now $6500. With the intial deposit of $10,000 at birth totals parents and child have only put 16,500 BUT... 7. At 65, she is nonetheless a MULTI millionaire thanks to compound interest. That small investment from us with compound interest in 65 years gives her $5,397,077.98 to enjoy in her retirement ( yes that’s indeed 5 millions and + with as little as 10,000 initial investment at birth and an additional $6500 contribution in 65 years.
