Some experts say choosing to stay inside our homes can seem like a valid justification during a worldwide pandemic, especially as case numbers climb and the rise in variants puts us at even greater risk. But Mark Antczak, a registered clinical counsellor with Anxiety Canada, says people need to push back against their fears. "We get immediate gratification and relief from avoiding the things we are worried about. But then it comes boomeranging back with a vengeance," said Antczak.

"Even if you feel emotionally depleted now, research suggests that it’s possible to consciously and systematically increase hope. In analyzing dozens of studies on brief hope interventions in older adults, Silvia Hernandez, a doctoral candidate at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, said cognitive behavioral therapies can significantly improve hope in people struggling with depression, health and bereavement."

"In expressive writing, the emphasis is not so much on what has happened, but rather on what it felt like. There have been various formulations of expressive writing, but typically a person sets aside 20 minutes a day for perhaps four days. The goal is to express feelings as spontaneously as possible, without regard to the need for a storyline or worrying about punctuation, and to write for oneself, not others."

"Hala Abdul, a Registered Clinical Counsellor from the Anxiety Relief Centre (ARC) in Vancouver, said that this continued rise of mental illness rates might end up being the case.More than anything, I think that this pandemic has robbed us of a sense of control since our options have shrunk, she told me. The feeling of anxiety in this instance is a lack of control; I can’t control the pandemic, so I am afraid of it."
