Details! Lots of pockets and raw edge details on my Vogue #v9304 pant pattern. Perfect for ponte knits. The top raw edge of the front pockets is stayed with a polyester grosgrain ribbon from @mokubatrims The back pockets have a button flap closure. Very flat and neat!... Swipe through to see the finding I used for the self fabric drawstring closure. #voguepatterndesigner #v9304 #sewover50 #memadewardrobe #pontepants #imakemyclothes #kathrynbrenneoriginal See more

Invisible Zipper Closure! Have you put an invisible zipper into a closed seam? I always sew the seam first to prevent a little bump from forming at the end of the zipper. * Apply double sided Wonder Tape to zipper tape * Working over a ham, position coil along seam line and angling just to the side of the seam at the bottom... * Stitch using an invisible zipper foot stopping when the edge of the foot touches the zipper pull * Close zipper to position second side * Carefully unzip and stitch as per first side * Wiggle zipper pull up through the bottom where the seam is closed * Add a second row of stitching to the outside of the zipper tape to keep it secure and flat I closed the inside of my fold over waistband with a button and tab. The bottom edge is finished with a silk satin Hong Kong finish. #sewazipper #sewingtechniques #memadewardrobe #sewover50 #invisiblezipper #invisiblezipperfoot #kathrynbrenneoriginal See more

A Tiny Handworked Buttonhole! My next pair of trousers require a small tab with a buttonhole as part of the closure. It’s hard to believe there are 68 stitches in this little handworked buttonhole! Black on black requires a good light and magnifiers #handworkedbuttonholes #memadewardrobe #couturesewingtechniques #handsewing #ihandsewing

Couture Trousers! Casual checked trousers from my self drafted pattern worn with a cashmere sweater, hand rolled silk scarf and fringe loafers. Very fine menswear wool cloth purchased in New York. Leftover silk charmeuse from scarf used to line the contoured waistband. If you would like to learn how to draft your own trousers join my friend and colleague @couturejonmoore for details of the July UK workshop. #memadewardrobe #patterndrafting #couturetrousers #couturesewing #couturesewingtechniques #kathrynbrenneoriginal

A Bound Zipper Tape! I love the problem solving aspect of sewing. So, when I couldn’t find a good zipper match for these beautiful cadmium chartreuse wool trousers, I came up with this technique to bind the zipper tape. I used the same silk twill from @joelandsonfabrics to line the inside of the contoured waistband. Swipe through to see the process. Second style of a personal drafted trouser pattern.... * Cut a strip of bias 1 wide. * Pin the wrong side of bias strip to the good side of zipper tape between the two woven threads of the tape. Baste. * Stitch the zipper and binding to the fly facing with two rows of stitching. The row closest to the outer edge will attach the binding. * Fold the binding over the zipper tape, turning under the raw edge. * Hand stitch folded edge of binding to zipper tape covering the inside row of stitching. #couturesewingtechniques #couturesewing #couturetrousers #joelandsonfabrics #memadewardrobe #kathrynbrenneoriginal

The Classic French Cardigan Jacket! This was a personal challenge to see if I could make a hand knit version of @couturejonmoore original pattern from last year’s Couture Workshops. After lots of swatching, calculating and sampling I’m pleased it came out the same. I used both sewing techniques combined with hand knitting to achieve the finished results. The three piece sleeve has a high armhole with a high sleeve cap and a shaped underarm panel. Most hand knits have a shal...low cap. Thank you to @sallymelvilleknits for helping me to shape the sleeve. It hangs perfectly! The soft knit trim was stabilized with grosgrain ribbon. After sampling different buttonhole techniques I finally came up with one that did not distort the row of white angora. The pockets were knit with a seam allowance and a turning stitch. The seam allowance was pressed under before the pockets were sewn to the jacket. #knittersofinstagram #memadewardrobe #frenchcardiganjacket #classicfrenchjacket #kathrynbrenneoriginal See more

The Classic White Shirt! I hand knit @sallymelvilleknits white shirt pattern using mohair. I added French cuffs. Buttonholes were knit and then finished by hand with a buttonhole stitch. Beautiful pearl and rhinestone buttons from @mjtrimming New York. The collar has a stand.... I think I need to knit another version out of linen. #memadewardrobe #knittersofinstagram #classicwhiteshirt #kathrynbrenneoriginal See more

The black luscious pullover and Classic White Shirt were designed by @sallymelvilleknits The French Cardigan is my own design but @sallymelvilleknits helped me out with the sleeve design. Hope Valley Flounce Details! My recent skirt designed by @romidesigns was a fun quick knit. The skirt is knit in the round beginning with a provisional cast on and allows you to try on as you knit. The lace work begins mid thigh. The hem has a knit on edging that binds off as you go. The waist is finished with an icord bind off forming a casing for the rope belt. I used discontinued @rowanyarns denim an indigo dyed yarn. It has been replaced with Rowan yarns denim revival. I ...used 10 balls and adjusted the pattern for shrinkage. I machine washed the skirt twice and dried until almost dry in the dryer. I hung overnight to finish drying and steam blocked the hem from the wrong side once completely dry. I knit the skirt with 6 of negative ease on the hips as the yarn is 100% cotton and will stretch when worn. Once stretched out at the hips it gives a mermaid silhouette, which is what I wanted. Less negative ease would give a straight silhouette. #romihilldesigns #hopevalleyflounceskirt #knittersofinstagram #iknitlace #handknitskirt #denimskirt #rowandenim #memadewardrobe #kathrynbrenneoriginal See more
