FinnFun School of Vancouver 21.12.2020

It is a busy season at FinnFun! Before the raffle today we had our FinnFun Christmas party via Zoom for kids in Tuesday classes. We played some games, had a few performances, did some Christmas crafts, sang a few songs, found an elf name for everyone, and most importantly, we had a surprise visitor from Korvatunturi joining our Zoom call! All the kids got to spend some time alone with him in the breakout room, and the excitement was tangible! At the end of the party the kids even got little presents the elves had brought over during the call! Tomorrow it is time for FinnTeens to have their Christmas get together, and then this fall 2020 semester is wrapped!

FinnTeen photo course was such a success - among other things teens got to practice nature- and product photography, using of clip-on lenses and of course photo vocabulary in Finnish. This mom felt compelled to secretly spy on the teens as all the stuff looked so interesting!

Teacher introduction is not really a correct term for this one - Kata is so much more! But here goes: Katriina Laslo "I am the board chair of the FinnFun School of Vancouver. In addition to the school administration I participate in the practical school arrangements and event organizing, and I also help as a substitute teacher whenever needed. ... I have been an active member of the FinnFun School ever since I moved to Vancouver in 2014 and my goal is to keep this amazing organization strong and lively even amid the current pandemic times. FinnFun has been a central hub for the Finnish community in Vancouver area for 35 years and ensuring that the operation of the school is preserved and contstantly developed is an important task. If you are interested in participating in the FinnFun community as a student, board member or volunteer you are welcome to contact me any time at [email protected]" Do you want to join the FinnFun fun? FinnFun is currently in urgent need of a board secretary. The position entails making the minutes of the board meetings, keeping student information organized, assisting with communications via email, social media & website, and other administrative duties as necessary. Meetings are mostly held via Zoom. Knowledge of Finnish language is not necessary.

Best part of FinnFun is recess - ask any student! Snacks, fresh air, running around to burn the extra energy! If weather allows, we incorporate outdoor play to our lessons, so today the bigger kids also played some color games after snacks were eaten.

Teacher introductions continue! Meet our new assistant teacher Magdalena Popelka - she is assisting the teacher Tanja Etherington on Tuesdays, in the little one's group. ******... I'm the assistant teacher for the group of 3-6-year old's in the school year 2020-2021. I'm a geologist by education and a database administrator by profession, and currently I'm on maternity leave. And as I love Finland, Finnish language and culture, I signed up for the assistant teacher position at the same time as I signed up my son as a student for the same group. As an assistant teacher my goal is that every student feels comfortable and that everyone is having fun learning! ****** Welcome to FinnFun, Magdalena!
