The coffee beans we get delivered to us comes via an incredibly diverse array of transportation modes. Bicycle, train, pack mule, tractor, truck, motorbike, bus, wagon, cart, jeep, boat, horse and wagon. But, even with all the technological advancements, more often than not, it comes to us via human strength. I am reminded of this every time I throw a 130-150lb sack of beans on our racks. Barely lifting the bag a foot off the ground. Often producers will carry these sacks on their backs for miles to be sold.

Costa Rican coffee is known as some of the best in the world and for good reason. Throughout Costa Rica farmers grow coffee in a way that is harmonious with the natural environment. They focus on sustainable practices that create a balance and interdependence with all aspects of life and the natural environment. What does this mean for our coffee from the Terrazu region in the Central Valley? No herbicides are used in the production of our coffee, instead weeds are con...trolled manually. Workers hand cut away unwanted vegetation, prune 20% of the coffee trees on a rotating basis and replace about 5% of trees annually for some producers this means planting as many as 200,000 trees per year. All of this is done on steep hillsides ranging from 3750 feet to 5000 feet in altitude. Coffee production is truly amazing.
