[Community Spotlight] For this weeks spotlight on the community we look to the West of our county to a hidden gem, Nordegg Alberta. For many of us Nordegg is... just our neighbour to the west, a small community with a few simple amenities, no large box stores, no traffic lights, and only a few hundred meters of pavement. What Nordegg really is, is a gem in our community a real one of a kind. We are and should be blessed that just a short drive away is one of Alberta’s greatest treasures when it comes to communities in the province of Alberta! With a deep rich history and ample opportunities to explore everything from days gone by to the wild, natural terrain and landscape that surrounds the townsite. We encourage you, your family and friends to explore and experience it for yourself. From a short one day adventure to digging in and setting up roots in one of Clearwater County’s great communities! The town site of Nordegg sits along the David Thompson Highway #11, approximately 90km west of the town of Rocky Mountain House, located in Clearwater County. Nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Nordegg is a picturesque three-hour drive from both Edmonton and Calgary, with many local and historical stops along the way. The area boasts everything outdoors from hiking, snowshoeing and cross country skiing, summer and winter camping, fishing and golfing in the warm summer months. The area is wild and untouched and awaiting your outdoor adventure. Nordegg was once a booming coal town and the early history of the town and area can be experienced at the Nordegg Heritage Centre and Brazeau Collieries, one of Canada's most complete industrial museums. Nearby lakes, rivers, streams, forests and mountains offer opportunities for recreational activity and adventure. Activities in and around Nordegg include hiking, biking, equestrian rides, back country adventure and survival camps, river kayaking, ice climbing, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, big-game hunting, fishing, canoeing, snowmobiling and OHV riding, to name a few. Around the townsite there are Long Lake and Carp Lake. Just a few kilometers down the road are Fish Lake and Goldeye Lake, both with developed camping facilities. There are numerous stocked fish ponds in the area. There are eco-friendly B&B’s, rustic campgrounds, hotels, waterfalls and wildlife. Nordegg is home to the Rockies first via ferrata, or iron ladder which scales a 600 foot cliff overlooking Alberta’s largest and most beautiful man-made lake; the 33 km long Abraham Lake. In the winter it is famous for the spectacular methane ice bubbles it produces. Nordegg has a quaint historic 9 hole golf course that presents breathtaking views of the mountains to the west.
