Attic Ladder Maintenance and Cleaning When was the last time you cracked your attic ladder open Seized attic ladders are a common occurrence our staff find on the road testing and inspecting ground ladders.... Debris such as blown in insulation and dry wall are the two common types of building material and debris that we find lock up the ladders. After every deployment of the ladder on the fire ground we recommend cleaning and inspecting the ladders in house when putting the apparatus back in service. All FTA technicians are active-duty fire personnel, and you can be assured we understand the importance of having your ground ladders ready, not for if something happens but for when something happens. Attention to detail will pay off - - For more information on equipment testing or training email us at [email protected] or call us at 506-461-2543 - - #firetrainingassociates #suppressionthroughaggression

THE BUNK BED. During primary search we know to prioritize bedrooms during sleeping hours. For that reason, firefighters must have a very good working knowledge of the common North American bedroom. Take time to learn the latest pinned posts on Pinterest, take a walk through your local furniture shops or do some online searches. What you will see might surprise you. Bunk beds have always been popular, but today we’re seeing many innovative ways to best utilize the a...vailable space in kid’s bedrooms. Take a look at the photos below , notice that it’s not always a bed on the bottom either. Be mindful of your surroundings. Take note of things like stuffed animals, kids tables, forts etc. These are all important indicators of children’s rooms. Always check above your head and along the wall when you touch a bed, assume it’s a bunk bed until you confirm otherwise. Stay up to date on the latest and greatest bedrooms on the internet and big furniture warehouses. Always, always check your walls. Search the walls the way you search the floor. This will help with orientation, finding doors and closets, and can help you find ladders and accesses to bunk beds and other spaces that could be in the child’s room. Remember that the primary search is a rapid thorough search for victims. You will not be able to achieve this without rigorous, in depth training to prepare you for these circumstances that you could easily encounter. We are here for them. Train like it’s your own family you’re searching for in the worst possible conditions and you will achieve the desired goals For class information contact us at: [email protected] or 506-461-2543 #firetrainingassociates #suppressionthroughaggression

Streamlight: Streamlight, Inc. FTA staff have proudly been utilizing streamlight flashlights since our founding in the late 1980’s. During our operations we often push our flashlights into some of the harshest conditions our gear can be put through on a regular basis. ... Although most departments are under tight financial budgets, you need to INVEST in current and reliable flashlights for firefighters going down range. Replacing vintage equipment with current technology is a must. This is extremely important when you’re running products that will last the harsh demands of the fire ground. It can be something as simple as tagging a faulty light out of service, ensuring that it doesn’t end up being in a situation where it is needed and not able to provide its function. Stay tuned to our page where we will dig deeper into some more in-depth posts regarding flashlight tips and tricks. #suppressionthroughaggression #firetrainingassociates #streamlight

When setting up the officer’s seat of the truck, remember officers need to have access to more than just the radio. Keeping essentials like the departments pre-plan book and the officers TIC are crucial to setting the officer up for success. The officer already has a lot on his or her plate from trying to ensure the engine/truck is going to the right address to doing their on-scene report and 360, they shouldn’t have to remember to go to a compartment to grab a tool. This is especially important for departments who have limited staffing because often the officer is required to assist his crew with things like stretching lines and forcible entry. Shout out to First Due Fabrications for some innovative ways of mounting equipment in the cab.

These sessions are custom designed to each fire departments operational district along with their department needs and equipment available. Three of our instructors delivered a custom Static Water Supply/ Drafting Operations with a mix of rope rescue training for the Nashwaak Valley Fire Department. While two of our other instructor...s delivered our very popular Engine Company Ops session with the Keswick Ridge Fire Department. Drop Bar Operations Drop bars depending on the fire departments operational district can be a common sight and not so common in other territories. Recognizing common bolt patterns among different variations of securing brackets can aide in recognizing drop bars. Attacking the bolts by utilizing a set of irons can be effective in compromising the drop bar or for the initial stages of the forcible entry process. Our staff prefer attacking the bolt heads by utilizing a Husky K...970 service rotary saw on a 45 degree angle for attacking the drop bar bolts. It should be mentioned that one key ingredient to successful forcible entry operations is additional back up plans in the back pocket. If your department is interested in building or refreshing your forcible entry knowledge and getting some "sets" and "reps" cutting and attacking drop bars contact us: [email protected] or (506)-461-2543.

During this session our staff covered a vast array of skills and techniques such as search size up, prioritizing search and both interior and exterior operations as the search crew. If your department is interested in our classes contact us at: [email protected] or 506-461-2543.

Angle Grinder Operations: A battery operated angle grinder is an awesome light duty forcible entry tool, this is what fill’s the gap between the irons and the K-12 when preforming forcible entry on today’s fire ground. This tool is great for confined space cutting of pad locks, window bars and commercial attic hatches. While this will never replace a rotary saw it is a great light weight addition to the outside vent team. ... Its ability to operate in an oxygen deficient atmosphere makes it very valuable to the RIT team as well as the truck company operating inside the fire building. If you department is looking for more information on this or some beyond the book forcible entry contact us at: [email protected]

Emergency Engine Shutdown Switches: These switches when not pinned can potentially place your department in a compromising position when accidentally switched to the off position. Pre-connected cross lay attack lines can be a culprit for hitting an unpinned switch and halting critical initial operations.... During our new "First Arriving Operations" class we will cover properly pinning this switch if equipped on your apparatus and the recovery process if the switch is accidentally deployed. Contact us for more information at: [email protected] or 506-461-2543.

Our instructors have been busy working in the background developing new classes along with improving our popular previously offered classes. If the session below sounds like one that could benefit your department us at: [email protected] or 506-461-2543 while our training calendar space is available. Firefighting in concealed spaces can be challenging for fire departments big and small. Fire travelling in these void spaces can quickly travel to uninvolved areas of the structure and tie up interior resources requiring them to thoroughly open up and stop the spread of fire. This in depth class will cover a multiple array of topics such as building construction, ventilation, thermal imaging cameras, engine company operations, opening up and much more.

What’s in your pockets? A popular post that’s been going around the internet lately is the discussion about what to carry in your fire gear. Your fire gear should be properly laid out on what works best for yourself, not other people. There are a few basic things that every firefighter should carry in their gear but the rest is up to you. Some firefighters don’t carry anything because they don’t want to be weighted down, while others carry a mini Home Depot selection in their... pockets. The best thing is it figure out what’s best for yourself and give it a try. Placement of these items are very important. I choose to carry anything I might need while I have a SCBA on in my pant pockets. The jacket pockets can be hard to access when your waist belt is on, so I leave medical gloves, seat belt cutters etc. in there. The few basic items every firefighter should carry are: - wire cutters ( don’t cheap out, buy the expensive ones) on my gear I put my wire cutters in my radio pocket, I use a radio belt so it opens up another pocket that’s close to my hands so I access quickly and easily if I’m pinned or in a tight area. It is important to grease them often and don’t dull your potentially lifesaving cutters on car batteries during motor vehicle accidents. - multitool / Knife (We recommend Leatherman Wave or Surge) - multiple door chocks for multi family buildings or apartment buildings. We believe a minimum amount of chocks should be 5 on each firefighter. I also carry one on my helmet, quickly assessable for myself or another firefighter to grab. This is critical when stretching dry to manage hose lines from potentially becoming jammed up in doors. - a good size piece of webbing that will fit around larger people with a carabiner that you can operate with gloved hands. The webbing isn’t only useful for firefighting activities you can also put it to good use during medical calls, mvc’s and much more! Let us know what you have in your pockets!

The Art of Taking Windows The importance of completely clearing the window during ventilation and vent enter search operations cannot be stressed enough as a life safety act. When forcing windows we want to ensure we completely clear the sash, screen and all glass. As an act of ventilation we want to ensure we utilize the complete opening to get the full effects of vent that window can provide. ... Civilian and firefighter survival can also be effected by not completely forcing the window. When we encounter victims during our primary search the window is often a solid exit tactic. Having the window completely cleared saves valuable seconds as we try transition the victim to the exterior of the structure. This also prevents additional injury from shards of glass that should already be cleared by using a hand tool and completely clearing all glass from the window. During firefighter survival having the window completely cleared allows more room for a fully equipped firefighter to transition from the window either in or out easier and sets the window up for a Window to door conversion.
