WOODSTOCK, ON August 16, 2020 - Woodstock firefighters responded to two structure fires Saturday night August 15, 2020. The first fire occurred at a residenti...al detached garage where firefighters rushed to the scene and quickly brought the fire under control. Damage to property is estimated at $40,000. Origin and cause fire investigation determined that the fire started on the outside of the garage and was caused by improperly discarded cigarette into mulch area. Later same night at 1:47am on Sunday August 16, 2020 firefighters were called to 80 Norwich Avenue, Len’s Mill Store, to report of an alarm activation. It was quickly determined that a fire was spreading within the store and on the inside of an exterior wall. Building’s sprinkler system activated and kept the fire at bay. In total 20 firefighters were able to knock down and contain the stubborn blaze. Vast majority of the large building was saved and the damages are estimated at approximately $200,000. The cause of this fire is still under investigation. Woodstock firefighters want to remind you that if you smoke, or know someone who smokes, please take a moment to learn how to prevent fires involving improperly discarded smoking material: Never dispose of cigarette butts in potted planting soil. Never flick cigarettes into mulch or shrubbery. Dispose of them in a suitable ashtray or bucket with water or sand. Ensure designated outside smoking areas have an appropriate noncombustible container, ashtray or bucket. Completely douse butts and ashes with water before throwing them away, as they can smolder and cause a fire.
