Good news Canadian Baptist family! Former Executive Director Terry Smith is sticking around! We’re so glad that he accepted the role of Director, Strategic Init...iatives. In his new role, he will be working with major donors and foundations, leading our recruitment strategy, providing strategic direction to CBM’s Faith + Work initiatives, helping to expand our donor base beyond our core constituency and writing on theological and missiological themes. Incumbent Executive Director Jennifer Lau says, I’m excited that Terry will be providing leadership in these areas, which will enable his gifts and experience to be well utilized. We are so blessed to have his continued leadership in the organization! #terrysmith #cbm #canadianbaptists See more

November 20, 2020 Dear First Baptist family, When so much of tomorrow is unsure, it does help to take care of the things you can pretty much count on. I’m confident that the dusting of snow we’ve seen so far will decide to stay and accumulate. The rakes have been replaced by shovels, the snow tires are humming below me, the window brush/scraper is bouncing on the back seat, the eaves troughs are leaf and pine needle free, the furnace filter is squeaky clean, the air conditio...Continue reading

October 8, 2020 Dear First Baptist family, Tuesday morning, after hearing on CBC radio that repair work would be happening on the Richmond St. train tracks, I headed to the church. But being a creature of habit and a little dull in the head, I crossed Oxford and saw the bright orange construction signs blocking the road ahead of me. Doh! I knew that. I can turn around and work from home, or I can recalibrate my route and find a couple of ways to skirt the obstacle and get ...to where I want to go. I recalibrated. Today I want to thank all the folks that have helped us recalibrate our movement forward. I’m grateful for the staff and volunteers who dependably facilitate and lead our virtual gatherings and meetings, who faithfully reach out with cards and calls of encouragement and consolation. I’m appreciative of those who attentively keep us apprised of the mission and ministry needs about us and assist in our response. I’m thankful for those who are working hard to maintain and carefully equip the space and ready it and us for our in-person worship. Recalibrating is a new habit to which we are all getting accustomed. While everyone has been unable to connect like we used to, I recognize, that for various reasons some have been unable to navigate the new ways we have attempted. This Sunday we will be opening the church building for in-person worship. It too will not accommodate everybody. But it is an alternate route around the obstacle of being offline. I communicated in previous letters that I expected we would be able to combine in-person worship with Zoom and so include more participants. We’ve since had to recalibrate. I’ve learned that in order to connect most seamlessly and in sync, those who want to follow the worship service from home will need to connect via the live stream link on our church’s website. So, tune in on Sunday at 10 a.m. For those wanting to attend in-person, remember you need to either register using the form on our website or call the office before Friday morning. Yes, we’re going off the beaten track. As we do, let us heed Paul’s counsel. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the centre of your life. (Phil 4:6-7, The Message). The link for Provision Time this week is in the email version of this newsletter. (7pm on Wednesday) Blessings & Peace, Pastor Al

October 1, 2020 Dear First Baptist family, While we’ve traversed the restless waters and turbulent waves in this pandemic season and are now feeling the swell of a second big one, we’ve bemoaned being confined to our cabins. We have departed the familiar and are venturing to who knows where. Yet through it all, we have been sustained by God’s sure and faithful presence. The parallels in our reflections on the Israelites journey through the wilderness have not been lost to us ...Continue reading

September 25, 2020 Dear First Baptist family, The church’s task force that was assembled to monitor the potential reopening of the church building met this week and has determined that, if gathering restrictions do not change, we will be ready to resume in-person worship in our sanctuary on Thanksgiving Sunday, October 11. I know a good number of you have been waiting patiently for this to happen; others have been unhappy and disappointed that we’ve been unable to congregate ...in person sooner. Still others figure they will be unable to meet safely for a long time yet. As I have noted in previous updates, in order to be thorough, safe and fair to all, we will be moving forward and opening up in incremental ways. The initial step in reopening will help facilitate the worship services of the three congregations sharing the building. The sanctuary will be prepared to accommodate the Spanish congregation on Saturday evening, First Baptist on Sunday morning at 10 and the Karen congregation will meet after the sanctuary and washroom have been disinfected. This has required the acquisition of many kinds of cleaning and equipping resources. It will also require that necessary protocols be implemented to follow the current health unit guidelines. In the coming days, we will use every means possible to apprise you of what you will need to know and do to attend worship. We will use email, snail mail and phone to reach you. For those able to access it, an instructional video is being prepared to help guide you through the process. Needed information will be posted on the church’s website. And a means for you to register your intended attendance at worship will be provided online and by phone through the church office. If you are unable to join worship in person, know that we are making strides in maintaining an available live streaming option so the least number of congregants will miss Sunday morning. While our movement together has been upset and hampered, we can be grateful for the caring support we have demonstrated to each other and to those we have missed serving in a personal way. Your faithful giving of your offerings in support of our mission and ministries has helped carry us through in our worship, discipleship and blessed a number of our city’s ministries that have been prepared and equipped to care on our behalf in Jesus name. So, let us continue to move forward as we are able and trust God’s guidance and care as he has so faithfully done in days past. And keep your ear to the ground as we stay in touch through tomorrow’s unknowns. Sunday Worship Link & Wednesday Provision link found in the email version of this newsletter. Blessings and peace, Pastor Al

September 18, 2020 Dear First Baptist family, I’ve heard folks describe what we are moving through as a kind of ‘wilderness experience.’ We’ve certainly moved away from a time that we have known as ‘normal.’ And there seems to be a consensus that the normal we once knew and, in some ways, we had taken for granted, will be something to which we never return. In the meantime, our present circumstances leave some of us disoriented, lost, frightened, insecure, or downright angr...Continue reading
