We couldn’t have our regular Sunday School wind up this year, so members of our Christian Formation committee delivered summer treats to a number of our kids. We hope everyone has a safe and blessed summer!

Text that is fitting for this historical time, from the 5th movement of Ein Deutsches Requiem by Brahms that we were to sing this evening: You now have sorrow; but I shall see you again and your heart shall rejoice and your joy no one shall take from you.... Behold me: I have had for a little time toil and torment, and now have found great consolation. I will console you, as one is consoled by his mother #firstmennonitechurch #firstmennonite #mennonite #anabaptist #winnipeg #winnipegchurch #welcomingchurch #brahmsrequiem #stayhome #coronavirussolidarity #physicaldistancing #holyweek #goodfriday #itisfinished

A member of our congregation is in need of a few face masks. This person is taking care of their aging grandparent while still working in the public sphere. If anyone has any they can donate, please contact Kathy Koop.

Wednesday, March 11, 7pm First Mennonite Church, 922 Notre Dame Ave . . Exploring past and present relationships between peace and policing in Winnipeg.... According to mainstream media Winnipeggers are increasingly fearful in their own city. Whether the conversation is about theft, addictions, or violent crimes there is a sense that things have gotten worse. Entangled in the question of peace and violence is the question of policing. What is the historic role of policing and how does that inform its practices and mission today? Who is best served by the police, who is most harmed? For groups committed to peacemaking and justice are there present and possible alternatives to policing that better serve those most vulnerable to violence? Dr. Bronwyn Dobchuk-Land teaches Criminal Justice at the University of Winnipeg. She researches the politics of prisons, policing, colonialism, and the carceral state in Manitoba and beyond. This has included a focus on community-level responses to violence, criminalization, and community policing, and community-based crime prevention programming . .. ... .... ..... #firstmennonitechurch #firstmennonite #mennonite #anabaptist #winnipeg #winnipegchurch #welcomingchurch #winnipegevents #communitypolicing #winnipegpolice #westendwinnipeg #northendwinnipeg #wpgpoli #peaceandjustice #deescalation #criminaljustice #policing #conialism

Can you guess what city this is? Tango took the world by storm in the early 1900s and milongas (social tango dances) were popular throughout Europe. Learn more at ‘An Evening of Tango’ and expand your experience of the tango by learning of its cultural roots and history. Not a dancer? Come and listen to the beautiful music of Argentina. Sunday February 16 from 7-9pm in the church basement.... Mission and Service Committee will also have a basket for donations going towards our refugee fund. See more
