FISH STORIES: A Change of Plans The day was planned as a sturgeon trip with my buddy Derek. A weather check the night before looked bad, forecasting big nasty winds with big gusts on big water. Probably should have switched gears to a different plan right there but I was hoping for the wind and weather to shift as they often do. . While I rigged the boat up for sturgeon, I left two musky rods and a few musky lures in the boat as a plan B just incase the forecast held up. W...e arrived at the ramp about 8am . Watching the 4 foot waves rolling and white caps spraying across the water, that put an end to any possibility of our sturgeon day. Well, on to the back up plan Back on the road to a body of water less affected by the big west winds where the small choppy waves were nothing compared to what we left behind. With only Two trolling rods and three musky lures to get something done, Let’s go! The first fish of the day was boated on my rod not more than 30 minutes on the water. A good one at just under 52 inches of musky too. At that point we were pretty happy with plan B, any day you get a 50+ musky in the boat is a great day so we were all smiles. An hour and a half had passed and as we approached the beginning of the Major, our second fish of the day is boated on Derek’s rod and it was BIG! 54+ inches of angry musky. A new personal best for Derek and two fish over 50 before noon? Just Awesome! My rod would fire the next 4 times in row with a very thick 49 a 47, 45 and 43 inch Muskies. Derek added a 7th musky at sunset to finish off a phenomenal day and the greatest plan B I’ve ever been a part of. To quote my brother Corey chance favours the prepared

FISH STORIES: The Musky Shakes My buddy Corey and I have a long history going back to 1998. He’s one of those once in a lifetime friends that is more brother to me than blood. So when his interest in walleye fishing faded and his curiosity in muskies sparked, I was more than excited about getting him into musky fever. . After a few outings we had a bunch of muskies in the boat but still none on Corey’s rod. The anticipation was building up, anxious about hooking his fir...st musky and maybe It didn’t help that I spent the whole time preaching the fundamentals and how important it is to stay focused and execute at the side of the boat. Stories of giants showing up at your feet out of nowhere after casting for 12 hours were keeping his attention high. At one point as we casted a weed flat, another boat trolling for musky had come right by us to say hi and as they passed by caught a nice musky a cast length away from us. We could hear them yelling and celebrating it’s a giant!. Now I could tell Corey’s anxious anticipation was climaxing . . He wanted a fish badly. The next spot we casted was planned out for sunset, a big fish spot for prime time. Corey was getting tired of throwing the same three baits I was feeding him and asked for something different. I handed him a Black suick thriller. Work a jerk bait I said. After a few casts he was loving it, I could tell he was in the zone casting away jerk pause, jerk pause, jerk pause.... his suick was back to the boat so the last pause was left hanging there a little longer. The water went from mirror to explosion , Corey’s rod loaded up and it was a rodeo fish! Jumps, runs and a tail walk too. Around the boat and In the net. In that moment all of the built up anticipation released and as I’m cutting hooks out of the fish it got quiet. Corey had the musky shakes, his face almost ghost white and ready to puke with excitement. The only fish I’ve seen do this to people are Muskies. I love it! We finished the week with 14 Muskies including a Muskies Canada swan trophy and Corey’s first 50+ musky. Another great memory and fish story to tell each other’s grandkids about. Now Corey is one of my hunting partners and proud to say he’s one of the best musky anglers I know.
