Keepin' the climbing streak going, another fun day today adventuring on the ice in gorgeous Northwestern Ontario
A couple of weeks ago Dave Rone and I put our sights towards venturing up a new mixed route at Orient Bay's Schoolhouse Wall and did the incredible first pitch. Today we continued up the second pitch which starts by handjamming through a stellar roof crack. Dave tackled it in style and made it past this and up to a blank section before taking a big ol whipper. We will likely put in a couple bolts tomorrow to finish it up to the top!
Today's adventure took us to the base of the wall we have been looking to climb for a few years now. Soooo siiiiick!
Super fun day climbing on a route we hadn't done before at Orient Bay. I won the rock, paper, scissors (good ol rock always wins!!) and got the pleasure to take the first lead on this shattering bad boy
Climbing yesterday with a crew of friends was an absolute BLAST at Kama Bay, Ontario! The conditions were perfect not only for climb time, but also for photo time :) here's a few from the collection. For guided adventures and courses check out www.outdoorskillsandthrills.com
When the sun shines, get yourself outside for a vertical adventure!
What a super fun weekend climbing at 'Grey Wolf' with lots of friends :D
There's something quite magical about Northwestern Ontario, maybe it's all the AWESOME adventures you can have, just like this! Just got this stellar shot of my roomies out sailing on the giant Lake Superior :D It's a beautiful evening tonight that's for sure!
Is this Squamish in B.C?? Nope, it's near Thunder Bay in Ontario!! I snapped this sweet shot the other day of climbers Matt Amon, Kate Ross and Peter Tyrie working their way up Mount Helen. Powerful images like this one are going to be featured on full pages (minus the watermark of course) in the guide book that I'm getting much closer to finishing up :D Have any pics of your or someone else climbing in Northwestern Ontario you'd love to see published in the new guide!? Send... me some photos and it just might make it in the book! ;) Please send images (high res) to [email protected] See more
Aerial footage showing the beautiful landscapes of Thunder Bay in Northwestern Ontario. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gpo0a-bGjJ0 Radio interference caused my first drone to epically crash, bit the bullet and got myself a new one though with better features than the previous one; so happy with it so far! *check out the crash video of the last drone on my YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/Viper2201 * you can click 'Subscribe' to see more cool vids as I put them u...p :) I'm producing a new rock climbing guide for the Thunder Bay region and this new drone is already really helping me get the best shots I can for the book, so stoked to get it out there ;) Aric Fishman Visit Thunder Bay Visit Northwest Ontario Ontario Travel Tourism Northern Ontario See more
A bird's eye view of the sky line on a casual Thunder Bay evening. One of the zillion reasons I love living here :)
This was a spectacular view of Lake Superior's north shore on a foggy and rainy day in Thunder Bay. With such an abundance of sweet terrain, Northwestern Ontario is an adventurer's paradise :)
Yesterday I went to a place I love, Claghorn just an hour east of Thunder Bay, and had such a fun time climbing with a great crew of people :) The conditions were not only prime for climb time, but also primo for photos! I always find myself feeling like I'm away somewhere on vacation when I go out climbing, but nope - it's all right here in Northwestern Ontario!
Climber Tyler Overby starting his morning warming up on an everlasting classic 'Cascade Falls' with his buddy Stewart at Orient Bay, Ontario.
Watch in HD | Trip Clips - Good times on great lines! A little video I put together using a collection of clips from a climbing trip with my buddy Jamie during the Fall of 2015. We traveled from Thunder Bay, Ontario over to Alberta - then to B.C - down to Oregon - out to South Dakota - and back home to Tbay. All this footage was shot with my phone and I gotta say I'm pretty impressed with portable camera quality these days!
Went out with my buddy Matt exploring locally to see how winter was shaping out in the hills. We brought our climbing gear with us but the ice wasn't in safe enough condition to climb. We scrambled up a slope instead to see the awesome view.
This sick shot always reminds me of the many many awesome trad lines I got to enjoy while at spending time at the City of Rocks in Idaho! Climbing road trips are always soo good :) Do you have a favorite climbing destination??
With the warming temps and full day of rain, the climbs here are...how do you say....WET :( .. But with all this extra water in the system, we are seeing the potential for just about every climb to form up nicely this year! It's just gotta get cold enough now! Went this past weekend with some friends to go explore how all the ice is shaping up around Thunder Bay and Nipigon areas. Here’s some photos I snapped from the weekend’s adventures. I also added pics that Paul Desaulniers took of Patrick Martel and I climbing on our second day out :) Bring On The Real Winter Already!
Got 20 seconds to see something magical?
It's Easy to See Why We Choose to Live Here! Check out this collection of rad photos I took of Kyle Brooks while climbing a route called 'Tamarack - 5.12a' in Thunder Bay, Ontario. We all had a great time getting after it on this brisk but beautiful autumn day :) It's really quite a fun line that goes through a variety of different crux sections that are each super sweet and pretty pumpy! Come visit Northwestern Ontario for some incredible climbing adventures whether it's on the rock or on the ice, you're sure to have an awesome experience! www.outdoorskillsandthrills.com
Some sweet pics I've been meaning to post for a while from a really great time at Claghorn right before I went on an awesome climbing trip for a few weeks. I bet the landscape there right now is even more breathtaking with all the fall colours in full effect! Pictures are of a super fun new sport route at the Outward Bound Wall that Peter Dryzmala and Marla Balzer recently established and named 'Smash That Cherry Twist - 5.10a - 10 bolts'.
Another fun day on the rock! Here's a pic of Stephanie Potter climbing up a route called 'Everything Goes Green' at the only developed sandstone crag in Ontario! Good times at Pass Lake :)
This crack was a bit wet and slimy but that still didn't stop Karina from following me up this fun line!
I love it when so many random things come together to create lasting memories and great times with new friends on the rock! Kim House and Graham McGrenere are on an epic road trip climbing around North America and got stoked from seeing all the sweet pics of Thunder Bay awesomeness in Gripped Canada's Climbing Magazine ;) Then randomly hearing about it from climbers in Lethbridge, to then talking to my buddy Justin Currie at Gear Up For Outdoors Ltd. who suggested they check ...out a fun cliff called Silver Harbour, to then later run in to my other friend Maty Pointner who was walking his dog with some friends at the crag and told them they would run in to Aric Fishman soon..and then after all that our paths actually crossed haha :) It was a wonderful time playing on the rock and getting to know these travelling crushers from out west with Joseph Anawati, Mitch Marostica and Karina Mora! See more
After an awesome day of guiding at Pass Lake I met up with some friends to get some laps in :) Here's a couple of pics I snapped of Andy Noga going through the 'Wild Child' roof on 'Steeping Beauty - 5.10a', and Sean Cameron on 'Mike Project -5.9'. Good times in TBay!
It was pretty rainy yesterday, but we still went for it and ended up having an awesome day!
Multi-pitch adventures around Tbay are always amazing :) there's so much rock to climb!
It's always a great time climbing with Paul.D and Andy.N, a couple awesome Tbay friends and super stoked rope partners! Our adventures this summer have been so fun and I'm incredibly grateful for their super positive energy and continuous support with Outdoor Skills And Thrills Inc. :)
Get After It This Weekend, No Matter What It Is! Photo by: Aric Fishman Climber: Jamie Funk
This is probably one of my favorite pictures of Thunder Bay rock climbing! It's a shot I captured this spring of my buddy Martin Dube going through one of the crimp sequences and looking epic on the 2nd ascent of Inspiration Station - 5.12a.
This sunny cliff has tons of routes that are awesome for climbers of all skill levels - it's always a fun day out! Here's a moment I captured a couple days ago of Jamie Funk climbing his way up 'Conan the Barbarian Wears Ballet Shoes - 5.10c' at Pass Lake near Thunder Bay.
New 30 meter 10 bolt 5.12a sport route developed by Aric, Jonathan Hollway, and Martin Dube at a breathtaking new crag in Thunder Bay, Ontario. We Found it, We Cleaned it, We Bolted it...I won the Rock Paper Scissors and then sent it! Here's a video I put together of the FA/F.F.A with aaamazing footage shot by Martin Dube. It's so much fun being a climber living in Tbay with endless potential for new routes! Thanks a bunch to Duncan Hutchison and Kyle Brooks for showing us these walls and paving the way! So much more to come...
This route at Silver Harbour packs quite a punch, even though it only stands 30 feet tall! Here's a photo of Mitch Marostica crushing the crimp sequence on 'Stretch to the Moon - 5.11d' in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
Ever wonder how these gizmos and thingamajigs are used to protect you while climbing? Perhaps you want to start lead climbing but want to make sure you're learn...ing the right way? Route development is always really hard work...but when all is said and done there is nothing quite like the satisfaction of a super fun line added to an area you love! Here's Martin Dube getting clipped in and then running it out high up on 'Flight of The Frenchies - 5.11c' - a route developed by Aric Fishman and Jon Hollway in 2013 -Thunder Bay, Ontario.

The Red River Gorge in Kentucky is just filled with amazing climbing! With wonderfully pocketed sandstone, gloriously fun cracks, and super strong bands of iron - every day climbing at The Red is a good day of climbing!
The video I had submitted to be the co-host for the television series 'Angry Planet Reboot'. I didn't get it in the end (I don't think..) but thought I'd share it with everyone anyhow :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96uYzR2XwE4

Northern Ontario is so beautiful! This summer Joseph Anawati made the goal to learn and climb more traditional lines. Here he is with Martin Dube making their way up 'Myopic Adventure' a 3 pitch classic trad line in Thunder Bay.
Northern Ontario really is a climber's playground! Here's Martin Dube working out the moves on a new stellar line put up by Duncan Hutchison and Kyle Brooks.
