This government has got to go. The last minister MP Wilkinson and now Jordan are fish out of water when it comes to leading the DFO. She couldn't answer one of MP Zimmerman's questions. They have their own scientific data and the other scientific data from user groups that provide a blueprint of how to rebuild, protect and selectively harvest the Chinook Salmon for FN's, recreational and commercial sectors. Today was a bitter sweet day. For the first time all sunmer I went DNA sampling for Fraser chinook. We fished for a set time period of 3.5 hours and sampled e...very fish that made it to the boat. There are a lot of fish around, just like last year. The amount of fish present is incredible. That is the sweet part of the day. If you were out in the third week of August last year you know what I mean. In my opinion all chinook encountered were 100% non endangered stocks, likely South Thompson 4.1. The DNA is going to prove this. They were all between 12 and 18 pounds at the most. The bitter part of the day is there should be a Public Fishery for these chinook. We can selectively fish for them with bait and take 1 a day, max 10 a year, with no threat to sturgeon or sockeye. Meanwhile there have been many First Nation chinook gill net openings in the Fraser and thousands of chinook have been killed by indiscriminate gill nets that are also killing sturgeon, sockeye (on the worst run on record) and endangered summer steelhead and summer coho. The fact there is no opportunity for Canadian citizens under the veil of conservation while hundreds of gill nets hang in the river is disgusting. This has nothing to do with conservation, this has to do with reallocation of a Canadian resource, culture, and economy to First Nation. DFO... How dare you use the word conservation in your closure of the Public Chinook Fishery off Vancouver from April 1 to Sep 1 then allow gill nets in the river to kill thousands of chinook, countless sturgeon and sockeye (on a year there are basically none). @justinpjtrudeau @bernadettejordanmp @fisheriesoceanscan should be ashamed of how they have managed chinook this season and senior management should resign (you know who you are). We suggest this opening is justified with earlier Chinook stocks of concern having migrated through the river and the target species would be more plentiful late summer chinook. Our request for an opening would also coincide with the announced Sept 1st Tidal opening as well as ongoing net fisheries. The Public fishery continues to support required conservation measures despite tremendous economic loss and loss of important family bonding fishing heritage. Our continued support is contingent on consideration of openings when stocks permit. Our proposal would include a one fish daily limit for anglers with cessation of fishing after retention. This method has demonstrated for years virtually zero impact on other stocks of concern. This evidence is factual not anecdotal. 3. This would be promoted as a Test fishery with a high presence of volunteers to advise anglers of protocol at major launch areas. Signage and handouts would be provided with messaging to be determined in coordination with your staff. The public fishery would also have monitors on site at significant fishing sites. 4. The Fraser River Public fishery has been very supportive recently of collaboration with F/N and your staff toward sharing the resource on the Chehalis and Vedder Rivers. We expect reciprocal consideration of our requested opportunities. 5. The financial loss to the communities from ongoing closures has been tremendous. A Sept 1st Chinook opening would play a small but significant role in offsetting some of these losses. 6. The social value of this opening cannot be over emphasized particularly during these pandemic restricted times. The public needs more family oriented safe outdoor activities. 7. Granting a restricted public chinook fishery would help to demonstrate that DFO recognizes and values the Public Fishery and wants to work with the community toward opportunities when conservation concerns abated. 8. Documented past creel census on the Fraser River demonstrates that the impact of a Bar fishery has minimum impact on stocks compared to other sectors. We cannot overemphasize the current frustrations and growing anger within our communities. The groups represented below do our best to provide respectful collaboration on the issues. For us to continue to speak for our many members and hopefully the public at large it must be demonstrated that our input is valued and seriously considered. We ask that you instruct your senior Fraser River staff to immediately arrange a meeting to review our proposal as we are open to suggestions how this fishery could proceed. In support of the Public Fishery Alliance, I went to a rally/protest today (as I did last year) to oppose the Dept of Fisheries and Oceans 2nd closure in the last 2 years of our Canadian way of life to fish for salmon in our seas or our rivers. If you live in the Vancouver area waters, we can't fish for Chinook Salmon until September 1st. The rest of the lower half of the province except for a few remote areas on the western and northern end of Vancouver Island, is closed unt...il July 15th. The Fraser River is closed to all salmon fishing except November and December. All First Nations, recreational and commercial fishermen agree that there is a a definite decline in the salmon returns that once was so plentiful in our ocean and river systems. DFO has failed to lead or implement scientific based recovery programs as put forward by FN's, the recreational and commercial sector and other science based groups that will have a positive return to our iconic fish. You only have to look at Washington and Oregon States as to their recovery programs success and statistics that has brought back their salmon. The many successful American salmon hatcheries mark 100% of the Chinook and Coho Salmon by removing the adipose fin for several reasons. Mainly, it's to identify the salmon no matter where and how it was caught that it originated from a hatchery and the DNA and/or the microchip can determine which hatchery and how old the salmon is. This data is very important for furthering the recovery programs. In Canada (BC) we only clip 10% of the hatchery raised Chinook Salmon because of costs. We have asked this government to let the fishermen retain just one hatchery salmon per outing. The yearly limit on Chinook Salmon is 10/year down from 20 as of 2 years ago. Hatchery reared salmon are not stocks of concern. Anglers in BC account for approximately 25% of salmon harvested and 15% of halibut, yet contribute 39% of revenues from all fisheries, including aquaculture, to BC’s economy. The related tourism and local travel activity in this Province is significant, and contributes $1.1 billion in revenues/yr. Small coastal communities that rely on the fishing ecotourism, the independent fishing guides, the lodges/hotels/campgrounds etc etc etc are facing their 2nd disastrous year compounded by COVIID 19 and many are not going to survive. DFO has again made a political decision over scientific based evidence to appease loud and well funded ENGO's. I and others throughout this province whether salt or fresh water fishing enthusiasts are speaking up and fighting back. I taught my children over 30 years ago to respect this natural resource and environment so that they can enjoy a lifetime of the ocean's bounties. Now I am standing up to DFO so my grandchildren will have the right to fish as well. See more
