Big House In The Little Woods 26.02.2021

I had been looking everywhere for a small round coffee table, but I could never find one. Or if I did it would be sold in a hot minute. So we made our own! (And by we I mean I asked Mark to do it ) I don’t know if you remember the table I picked up for free, a few posts down, that needed some work on the top from some burnt pots. Well, I’ve had it for the year, to puzzle and do homeschool with the kids, but I was tired of all the big furniture I had in that area, storing so ...much crafting and school books. I wanted a place I could sit and enjoying looking at our beautiful piano, and drink some coffee. And with the tree needing a place to be put, it was an opportunity to clean out that area (which took me three weeks ), and move the Christmas tree to the living room, and the chairs to their new spot. With my coffee table to boot! Mark took the table top off. Cut down the middle with his skill saw, so that the table would be an appropriate coffee table height. Around 16 is what we were going for. Once we had our middle piece cut, Mark measured out where the bolts needed to be, and drilled out holes slightly smaller so he could turn them into place. Once the bolts were reattached, and the legs back in place, we set the top back on what she belonged! One light sand, and a coat of varnish later, she makes for one beautiful coffee table.

Got this finished last week! I’ve had the table done for awhile, but with all the stuff going on outside I hadn’t been able to convince Mark to finish the bench sooner. It’s stained, and sealed, and ready for 7 children butts to slide across it several times a day.

9 days of cutting, nailing, staining, varathaning, gluing, and re-gluing, has resulted in a pretty awesome lattice for my clematis. No, I will not be putting in orders for this one Thank you Pinterest! My husband loves you! ... (To be kind to Mark on this one, I did everything except cutting. ) See more

Do you remember my posts last year when we were clearing trees?? After last summers 80 tree and stump removals, and hours of levelling we finally have a yard. You can see the lighter coloured grass, and that was the extent of our yard on the west side of the house. So this year we are hoping grass pulls through, and we can lay out a garden. Everything in time Check out my highlights to see how many trees we cleared last year!

I wish I would have taken before pictures, but I really didnt know if this would work out at all. I received a free table, which I figured wouldnt hurt to experiment on. The top was completely destroyed, with burn stains all over it. I thought if stripping it didnt work out Id just paint it. But, hooray! The paint stripper rescued the top, and I was able to lightly sand it, stain it, and seal it back to perfection! ... The kids will get to use it as a puzzle, craft or homework table

After weve had our kitchen running for close to two years now, and slowly adding flooring to the rest of the main floor, weve finally finished! (Well almost finished. Theres one small space by our front stairs that needs special attention.) It took lots of extra $$$, which is why it took so long, but the floors are level! And there are no more splinters! The kids are ecstatic, but I think Im happier. Something is finally crossed off our list. Lots of frustrating situatio...ns have happened in this house, but nothing some adjusting, $$$, and loving cant fix. Would it be bad of me to start a gofundme and get this house closer to the finish line

Some new backsplash, and shelving for our kitchen! I love how rustic it feels, and its starting to fit in with the rest of the house. One little bit at a time here and we will eventually get all the things done. Now just to add the tiles I have picked out for behind the stove! Anyone know how to tile?

With all the craziness going on in our house, I needed some stress relief! Anyone else going through some major renos currently I feel like my life is spinning out of control. It is complete chaos at our place. And being a perfectionist, I am having the worst time with this. There is no space here to refurbish, but I just couldnt not add to the chaos and made a space in my kitchen. It does help me get through the day, so thats a win in my book.... Sorry guys that I didnt take before pictures on this one. It was a mess! The mirror frame was destroyed. The previous owner tried to glue it back together with a foaming construction glue I couldnt even just sand it down and fill it in, because the frame was so out of whack, it didnt hold the mirror properly. She also glued the mirror on to the frame.... Ill let that sink in. So I had to chisel away the rock hard glue to let go of the mirror, and I did manage to get it out safely But I ripped the frame apart and chiseled away all the nasty glue with an electric chisel that I borrowed from my dad, and will be investing in in the future. Its a time saver! But it took a week to glue and fill in the frame. And sand it down to look presentable. I just have to finish distressing the frame and varnishing it, and it should be ready to go! *Update on the house coming up*

Long time no post! The summers usually are busy, but this summer we sure have been tested with everything possible. We are still waiting for our insurance to be approved, and all that waiting caused havoc to run amuck our household. If you can remember, our chickens hatched the day after our barn burned to the ground and we had no place to put them. They ended up in our laundry room, and we had planned on them staying there while we were waiting to be approved. Well, turns o...ut that it was a good thing we didnt wait any longer than we already did. And we are so thankful for the generosity of my parents who gave us one of their old granaries that they didnt need anymore, so we could transfer those messy chickens to a proper coop. With feces literally everywhere ... my worst nightmare you guys, and with how horrible the floors were to begin with, it was inevitable for them to get ripped out. We already knew that something was wrong with the joists from what we could see in the crawl space, but ripping the lipstick off this pig has sure been an eye opener. We are going to have to secure some load baring walls, and double up some joists while we have the flooring all open. Mark is pretty sure that if this house hadnt been made out of fir joists, our house would have toppled down on itself already. Comforting, right. So I will probably go a few weeks without doing laundry. (When you have 6 kids you HAVE TO DO LAUNDRY) And we will probably be spending a few extra so we can sleep soundly, not worrying about this house caving in. Next will be the rest of the main floor. And we can see what underlying problems will arise there too. But for now, hopefully we can get my laundry room back, and functioning You can see in the last few pictures the joists resting on the foundation, being held together only by a 1 x 4 And a joist under the load baring wall cut off completely. No wonder why some walls in this house are sinking...

Today started out about as bad as it could have. 3 days left on our incubator, our barn that Ive waited four year for us to make useable for chickens, was finally finished on the inside. Ready to go for our birds. At 5:15 Mark woke up to a loud bang He woke me up by yelling my name and I instantly panicked, thinking our kitchen was on fire. I could hear the sparks and the intensity of the colour orange in our room was horrifying. I ran up to look out our window and saw our... barn engulfed in flames, so hot that it burned down to the ground in less than an hour. We are thankful it was so wet outside, that it didnt spread. We have been cutting down trees for the last month and have twigs everywhere, along with branches close to our house. We could have woke up to our house in flames. Ive spent my morning crying, over all the work weve put into this barn. But through all the tears Im still beyond thankful that this was all. Our animals are all okay, we are okay, and someday we will rebuild. God is looking out for us See more

This house, as big as it is, has had no space for storage since day one. Its hard to see when youre so in love with a house, the first time you see it, that its lacking in something. You just see it as big, and that couldnt possibly be a problem with all the things you have. Well for starters, this house does not have a basement. Which I deeply regret not considering when we bought this place. A basement would be amazing for toys and storage like Christmas decorations, wi...nter jackets, summer stuff. *sigh* We thought we could take advantage of the attic, which is huge, to use as a storage place till we sorted some things out. Turns out. The attic is full of mice, millions of flies and wasps that continue to come through the walls and roof thats falling apart, and mould . So everything that weve had up there for storage has been full of one or all three of those things. A lot of things Ive had to throw out, and Ive been so disheartened with that. We will eventually have to take off the entire roof, and spray foam to fill the cracks, so no more rodents or bugs can make their way into our house. That cant happen right away, obviously. Who has that kind of money on hand. Maybe I could start a go fund me The best solution to a problem of non storage (or currently crappy storage) is making a room that was enormous for a laundry room, and cutting it down to divide some space for laundry and storage! Lets remember, this room was once our original kitchen. Tiny as it was for a kitchen, is enough room for our new plan. Ill miss my tree wallpaper. It was the very first thing I put up in the house when we moved in. But to create this new room for something this house was horribly lacking, is pretty exciting! Turning this house from a bed and breakfast to a family home has been a struggle, but so worth while. Some days Im really frustrated and want to be finished with all these renovations, but moving forward, we are slowly yet surely getting there.

Not too sure how I feel about this colour. I guess if Im already thrown off by it, its a no go. Whats a girl to do, when I have no vehicle to drive to the city, and a limited amount of paints sitting in my back room.

The last few months have been horrible to me. Right before New Years I fell down a friends stairs and fractured my tail bone! I couldnt walk or sit for weeks. I had so much adrenaline the night it happened that I didnt realize how bad it was. Till my doctor told me, it was more than likely that I fractured it seeing as I couldnt walk without pain or sit! But of course, they cant do anything about that. Hitting the beginning of February I could sit down and walk without e...xcruciating pain! Finally. Than on the 14th my rib cartilage broke. And I couldnt move my left arm or lay down without feeling like I couldnt breath. Or without the feeling that my lung was in fire. Only now can I lay on my side without seizing pain. So my renos have been, none, to say the least. But when I got home last night and saw that my husband, without me nagging, finished the top for the washer and dryer I was super happy! The little things people. Thats really all a women wants. That piece had been sitting around for years, and than cut before Christmas. But nothing further. I didnt think it would be done before I could start working again. Its an old bowling lane, and I love its detail! It will look so awesome when its all finished! Also, Im struggling with what colour I should paint those cabinets! I love the distressed details, but the colour no! Ideas??

Big House In The Little Woods 10.09.2019

The other day I expressed to my husband that I was sick and tired of the hallway not being finished. Going on 3 years now. So I made him go out and buy more poor man shiplap (Pro board, which we have to cut to size. But it is totally worth it! And for the price ... ) So last night he got to work, and today I worked! We finally covered the ugly central vac (the people before skimped out on soooo many things in this house), and tomorrow we should finish the rest of th...e room. The only thing I have to wait for now is the side trim for the door frames. We have to put new flooring in, hopefully this winter yet. Only than can we finish all the trim! Baseboard included. The house in reno mode and Christmas time decorations are really driving me loopy. But how can you resist when you have kids! Merry Christmas!

Big House In The Little Woods 03.09.2019

This cabinet! This is what has replaced the shelves that were here previously. Weve only had this kitchen for a few months and I already changed my mind on the design. (Please never allow me to build a house from scratch) ... I found this cabinet at a flea market this fall. It was just lovely, and I couldnt not incorporate it somewhere in my house. As much as I loved those shelves that were originally in that corner, I found them collecting clutter and dust. Especially clutter. But because I loved those shelves I asked Mark to re-salvage them and put them beside the fridge (previous post). I also needed power for this cabinet to hide all the changing docks we have. It worked perfectly to cut out a square in the back and place the outlet front on the back of the cabinet. It all looks very intentional! What do you guys think??

Big House In The Little Woods 20.08.2019

There are lots of things that have been going on in this house that Ive neglected to share! Lots of little projects that weve had to do to move forward on the bigger projects. Like one I dont even want to talk about, but we wouldnt have these shelves up if we didnt do it. (It involves moving the fridge over 2 inches, which meant moving studs over, re-drywalling, adding electrical outlets, tapping, mudding, painting, the fridge staying in the homeschool room for 4 days... ... yada yada . All for TWO INCHES THAT I MISSED IN THE ORIGINAL PLAN) Yes. That was the biggest pain in both our butts. It came down to, do you want the trim to be half the size it normally is beside the fridge? Just to have 2 extra inches of space on shelves. I couldnt okay that. It bothered me too much. But, we are finally past that, and were able to put up shelving on the side of the fridge last weekend. The Ikea sides for the cabinets are super expensive. I couldnt justify buying two pieces just to cover both sides of the fridge. The width of the cover was more than wide enough to cover the side of the fridge. So I made sure Mark used the cut piece for the opposite side of the fridge. (Pic. 5) It was a lot cheaper to buy a 4x8 piece of MDF and paint it to match the wall colour and fill that empty gap than buy a whole other side cover. Mark measured out a perfect piece to fit alongside the fridge. And from the back of that piece he could screw the shelf brackets into place. Each shelf placed perfectly to fit for what I wanted on each one. The outlet behind the stereo. A shelf tall enough for cook books, CDs, bins, and other little trinkets. I love the way it turned out. Despite how much effort it took, and the little extra to move the fridge over. And if you scroll through my feed you can see I used the shelves that were in the other corner of our kitchen for these shelves Ill share another day what I put in that corner

Buh bye shoe cabinet! Hello shiplap And to think, that yellow door used to lead to our old kitchen. Which was tucked away and hidden from the rest of the house. That room is now serving as the laundry/painting projects room. I dont miss that teeny kitchen at all.

Big House In The Little Woods 01.08.2019

Our shoe cabinet found a new spot! After finishing the shiplap in our hallway, we decided to devote that place solely to guest coats and bags. There is not enough storage in this old house. A huge lack of closets and coat racks. So when people come over, no one knows where to put their stuff. We will be making a sufficient space for our friends and familys things when they stop by. Where the shoe cabinet used to be!... And now, the cabinet sits pretty in our mudroom/pantry *I have had many, MANY people ask where I got this beautiful piece! It used to hang in an old post office. And my uncle who worked for the post, claimed it and few others when they took it down, and gave them to my dad. He uses them to organize his screws and bolts in his work shop. So I asked for one of them, and here it is. I just love it!*
