IMPORTANT REMINDER ON HOW TO HELP AN INJURED BIRD Birds that hit windows often have injuries that cannot easily be seen (such as eye ulcers), even if they just looked stunned. Your best course of action is to safely contain the bird and immediately contact your local wildlife rehabilitation facility for advice. If you live in the Toronto area, call the wildlife hotline at Toronto Wildlife Centre at 416-631-0662 and leave a message. For wildlife rehabilitation centres outside of the Toronto area, and for more information, visit our webpage: https://flap.org/finding-an-injured-bird/ If you have found an injured bird and need advice, try FLAP Canada’s bird rescue hotline at 416-366-3527. Please DO NOT contact us through social media or email about an injured bird.
Migrating birds need to take breaks to refuel during their long journeys, and many must stop in urban areas. Make your yard a bird-friendly rest stop: https://flap.org/backyards-for-birds/ #WorldMigratoryBirdDay
Welcome to May, and all things birding. Yes, virtual is the way to go again, but there are some great speakers and talks lined up. Why not check out the events page and join in? For all birder levels: there is something for everyone!
#WorldMigratoryBirdDay is on Saturday May 8! We’ll be celebrating all week by sharing interesting facts about bird migration and tips on how to help birds. How will you be celebrating?
If you have ever experienced the heartbreaking thud of a bird hitting your window, know that you can prevent other birds from meeting the same tragic fate. There are so many easy and attractive options to make your windows bird-safe. If you have the power to save birds’ lives, why wouldn’t you?
On behalf of the truly amazing folks who are our eyes and feet on the street, and our backbone since 1993, we thank all volunteers past and present, who have helped FLAP Canada achieve so much. #NationalVolunteerWeek is dedicated to all of you. You made a world of difference to each and every bird rescued, like this yellow-bellied sapsucker.
Well said Brendon Samuels, well said. https://www.owensoundsuntimes.com//bird-collisions-with-wi
Recent wild and crazy weather has left many with uncertainty about what is still to come. However- absolutely no doubt whatsoever about birds migrating northbound in spring. Help make their journey safer no matter where you live with #MakeWindowsSafeForBirds. Listen in to a Pittsburgh panel to address safety for spring bird migration. Thanks to our friends @birdsafepgh for their work in raising awareness. https://triblive.com//pittsburgh-panel-to-address-safety-/
@FLAPCanada director Micheal Mesure believes that, in order to fully protect birds, we must change the Ontario Building Code, so that all new construction adheres to something called bird-safe standards.: https://hubs.li/H0FH8ty0

Final day of Great Backyard Bird Count 2021 - have you checked in with your list? 5860 species seen so far in 222.1 K complete checklists. There is still time to take part. https://ebird.org/gbbc/region/world
Thanks to La Verrerie Walker / Walker Glass for spreading the word. Now we need people to heed those words and do their part to #MakeWindowsBirdSafe.
Thanks to EcoFair Toronto 2020 for inviting FLAP Canada to participate in this community outreach.
On top of everything else that has been going on this past year, we have now added species #173 to our list of birds found since 1993. This horned lark was found in the downtown area, and we know that some do spend the winter along the lakefront. Such a shame that this one will not be joining them.
These 2 Rusty Blackbirds were found this morning on a raised terrace. Not the way we hoped to close out the monitoring season, and definitely not with a Species At Risk. We mourn all the dead birds we find, and look forward to the day when all windows will be #BirdSafe.
Heartiest congratulations to the City of Ottawa for reaching out to interested stakeholders such as Safe Wings Ottawa, and to all who were able to get this approved by Ottawa's planning committee. We are proud to have been included in the consultation process, and hope that this receives full council approval on Nov. 25.
If you participated in #GlobalBirdRescue don't forget to enter your collision reports by November 15th!
