There is an article circulating facebook recently about Mary Kay & animal testing that is incorrect and actually over 7 years old. (it comes around about once a year) The TRUTH is that Mary Kay has taken a lot of heat for staying in the Chinese market because it meant the government would take the products and test the on animals but they had ...LONG TERM VISION to end animal testing worldwide and knew they only way they'd have influence there was to stay. So they did and that decision has finally paid off as China announced recently they are ending animal testing (thanks in large part to Mary Kay's influence behind the scenes). MK has always led the way to end animal testing worldwide and has NEVER tested any products on animals in their 56-year history. In fact, MK was one of the few companies back in the 80’s to call for a moratorium on animal testing. Additionally they have been an active and founding supporter of the Institute for In Vitro Sciences to show alternative testing methods internationally for cosmetics and skin care. If MK had pulled out of China due to this issue they knew they would be leaving the animals with NO voice and little potential to change. So, MK chose to be a change agent in China. Sometimes doing what is RIGHT isn't always popular and not everyone will understand or agree but I'm proud of a company that does the RIGHT thing anyway, regardless of cost or popular opinion. More FACTS: MK sponsored an "Alternatives to Animal Experimentation for Cosmetics" conference in Beijing in April 2011 organized by the China Cosmetics Research Center in the Beijing Technology and Business University. MK was also one of the first companies to work directly with the dermatology experts used by the Chinese government in their review process of alternative testing in lieu of animal testing for cosmetic products. In fact, they sponsored a symposium for dermatologists in China on the use of human clinical methods for product safety in 2007. MK conducted an educational forum for the Chinese Society for Toxicology in 2009 to again share information on alternative testing methods. Mary Kay is one of only two cosmetic companies listed as scientific contributors to the first book in Chinese describing alternative principles and applications. MK has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing at Johns Hopkins University.
