One of the reasons why fitness is deemed recreational and not essential is because very few have been able to define it in a way that can stand up to science, m...eaning it can be measured and improved with precision and accuracy. CrossFit has done this. Fitness is an increased work capacity across broad time and modal domains. Whether it’s lifting weights or walking up the stairs, we can measure your capacity for this mathematically. Anything that can be measured can be improved upon. How you improve upon this is up to you - that is where we lose folks - it does not have to be CrossFit. You can do whatever you want to improve your fitness but in order to truly measure improvement on it we need to be on the same page. Walk up and down the stairs 10 times and time it with a stopwatch. Improve your nutrition and walk for 20 minutes a day for 2 weeks. Walk up and down the stairs 10 times again and time it - if you are faster, you are fitter! All the other pieces, weight loss, increased energy, increased mood, etc are benefits of fitness, but not MEASURES of fitness. This is why most folks lose sight of their New Years resolutions and lose motivation, they don’t have a measurable goal. This is also why people stick with CrossFit for YEARS. Magnum Athlete @better.u.fitness shares some insights on why you may not be seeing the results you want. Why do I think it's a mistake for beginners to follo...w haphazard workout plans, or even have no plan at all? As a beginner, you're in a position to make the most progress with the least amount of work. We call these initial quick results "beginner gains," which unfortunately don't last forever! This is where a beginner can make progress with simple methods and minimal commitment but an intermediate or advanced lifter could not. As your training experience increases, you continually have to train more strategically, with better technique and top-notch commitment to see the smallest amounts of muscle growth. This is where most people start to plateau, because they've never learned the basic skills that become more necessary as you go. They don't know how to keep making progress when progress no longer comes easily. The beginner stage doesn't last forever, so learning these skills early is the best way to set yourself up for long-term success. Following a well designed plan, learning the movements and developing your training habits early will set you up for life.
