My first harvest of the year is almost always poplar buds. I look forward to catching wafts of the sweet and completely unique smell while walking through the woods. The best time to harvest buds is after a windstorm when the branches break and fall the the ground around the tree. It’s always a treasure hunt and I find at first I see none until I basically crawl on the ground and find stashes. I use poplar in my West Coast Pain Salve for pain relief and in my Poplar Chest Rub for its warming effect. I love preparing herbal medicine in creative ways that folks will enjoy. Tinctures (alcohol based medicine) have low compliance in clients as they usually don’t tastes great and not everyone can take alcohol. Ashwaganda (withania somnifera) harvest! Had a significantly larger harvest then last year having put these bbs in the greenhouse. The tops are deceiving in size with the roots staying fairly small. Withania is a traditional Ayurvedic plant that is a calming adaptogen, helps to balance hormones and can help lengthen sleep especially for those waking in the middle of the night. I’ve heard the best results from people experiencing menopause who have struggled to stay asleep through the night. Once when I was apprenticing with @wildseedschool I almost passed out from processing so much of it because it lowered my blood pressure so much!
