These custom steel garage doors were treated with acid to give them a weathered texture. The acid wash was applied with a push broom, creating the unique brush patterns. You don’t always need sophisticated tools to get beautiful results. A house on the Naramata bench which I helped design and build during my internship at Allen + Maurer Architects. We did construction management of the build as well. A sheltered courtyard separates the main living spaces on the left, from the bedrooms on the right. The garage is completely buried underground with a stairway that surfaces into the 360 degree views of the glass living volume. The bedroom building has more protective architecture with weathered steel cladding an...d a green roof. This is another project incorporating geothermal heating and cooling, which here is delivered through an in-slab hydronic system. High performance glass coatings, large canopies, motorised exterior shades, a narrow footprint, and good cross ventilation eliminates the need for mechanical cooling during the hot Okanagan summers. A wonderful timber granary from the foothill region of Bern, Switzerland where our family is from. The dramatic eaves and the second floor gallery, as well as the poetic carved inscription are common features in the traditional rural architecture of the region. It’s not uncommon to find 300+ year old timber structures like this one that are still in use.
