In 1954, a 20-year-old African American Landscape artist challenged Florida's Jim Crow laws, while pursuing his love of painting. His artistic creativity and influence on what would eventually become 25 other Black artists created the incredible story and the stunning art that would create a mid-century American Art Movement. Still relatively unknown, the Florida Highwaymen's story is equally if not more, relevant today than it was in the mid-1950s. Surrounded by racism and social confinements, they broke free and chased their own story of the American Dream, while creating a legacy of a primordial Florida, now lost in time and to the tools of man. Their unique part in 20TH century American culture and history.
