It isn’t a Tuesday, but I’m continuing my series on wedding floral pricing anyway! I’m not sure where the week went, but here we are... SO, what should you expect your $3500 wedding florals budget to look like? Here are two options, for two sizes of celebration. Option 1: 100-150 guests... $900 standard wedding party flowers (main bouquet, main bout, 4-ish attendants’ bouquets , 4-ish attendants’ bouts, a few family accessories, child’s posy) $800 ceremony flowers (2 large focal arrangements for the altar/focal point, a few aisle markers or a welcome feature) $900 reception flowers (sweetheart table feature, bud vase duos for 15 or fewer tables, cake florals) $800 delivery, set-up & on-site labour, break-down Option 2: 150-250 guests $900 standard wedding party flowers (same numbers as above) $1500 ceremony flowers (focal point feature such as medium-coverage floral arch, welcome sign feature or a few aisle markers) $300 reception flowers (sweetheart table feature) ** no guest table centrepieces ** $800 delivery, set-up & on-site labour, break-down Neither of these scenarios account for taxes or additional rentals (such as vessels/vases, etc.) The reality is that not all things are possible at every price point. Even the most inexpensive centrepiece options will only stretch so far if there are 20, 30, 35 tables to decorate. Friday morning and I am sitting here enjoying a hot cup of coffee in a quiet house before I put the push on to finish getting ready for baby 2’s imminent arrival... Many friends, vendors, and clients have been asking me what my plans are for getting back to flowering... at the moment, I am anticipating being able to return to a limited event schedule as of January 2021. Literally the only way to get a face-on shot of me at an event is to stop me and make me stand still for thirty seconds. Possibly with bribes. My four-year-old and I have that in common! More often, I’m in contortionist mode making sure that every bloom and stem is in exactly the right place. Perfectionism is both a blessing and a curse in my field: I will make sure every detail is absolutely perfect for my clients, but I also have a super hard time stepping back in th...ose moments where done is better than perfect. (And let’s be honest: sometimes my over-thinking brain is the only one who thinks those two words are mutually exclusive. ) It’s so hard to strike a balance, and I bet my fellow creatives understand exactly what I mean! A good colour palette comes from having many tones and variations, just as a beautiful painting has highlights, midtones, and shadows. You can set a relatively simple colour palette and still create visual interest! Allowing your floral designer the freedom to take your favourite colours and play with them the way a painter would means you will get florals that have depth, movement, and artistry. The reason some bouquets just look so off is because they don’t incorpor...ate those transitional tones and colours. So you end up with a polka-dot colour effect. (pink rose, white rose, pink rose, white rose etc.) I am so lucky to work with clients who trust my vision and allow me to paint with their flowers! I got to push the boundaries with this bouquet, incorporating fall foliages and unexpected ingredients in an asymmetrical, free-form shape. Ok, so let’s talk about the M word. Money. There are a LOT of misconceptions about what a reasonable wedding floral budget looks like. (Thanks, Pinterest. ) Over the next few Tuesdays I’ll try to break down a couple of common budget price points so that you can get an idea of what is theoretically possible. (I say theoretically because every floral designer works within different pricing structures, and of course this all depends on seasonality, desired desig...n, labour costs, etc etc.) So what could a $5000 floral budget get you? (Possibly) 1 : 100-150 $900 wedding party flowers (main bouquet, 4 attendants’ bouquets, main boutonnière, 4 attendants’ bouts, 2 fathers’ bouts, 2 floral cuffs for the moms, 1 flower girl posy) $1300 ceremony flowers (medium-ish altar feature like an arch or chuppah with partial floral coverage, welcome sign feature or a few small aisle markers) $1800 reception (sweetheart table feature, 15 MEDIUM seasonal centrepieces, cake florals) $1000 delivery, set-up & on-site labour, break-down 2: 150-250 $900 wedding party (same numbers as above) $800 ceremony flowers (two beautiful altar arrangements + rented display pedestals, welcome sign feature or a few aisle markers) $2500 reception (sweetheart table feature, 25 SMALL seasonal centres, cake florals) $800 delivery, set-up & on-site labour, break-down (no big arch install means fewer hours on-site) Not included: taxes, additional rentals and styling pieces, etc. Now, it should be said that I based all these numbers on floral pieces that would be in-season, and according to industry-standard pricing. There will always be people out there who charge less (or more!). As with most products and services that don’t come from a machine, you generally get what you pay for. It’s Friday! I am so looking forward to this weekend because I get to flower a BEAUTIFUL wedding - my last of 2020, before I hunker down for my maternity leave for a couple of months. So you know I love flowers and weddings, but here are three things you might not know about me: 1. I trained first as a musician and teacher, and still teach music at the elementary level (band, choir, violin all the things!). I honestly love both my teaching and my floral jobs. I’m... so lucky to get to work in two creative, people-driven fields. It’s a lot of work and it isn’t always easy on my family, but I’m grateful for their support of my big dreams. 2. I love to garden and have big dreams of growing gorgeous blooms for my clients but we moved to a mountain and are sitting on solid rock so I have to figure out the raised garden bed situation after baby. 3.
