The crocuses are blooming and the honeybees are going crazy! Seasonal cut flowers are just around the corner!

Winter experiment winner- bleeding hearts. I planted these in buckets in the fall, and then kept them cool until mid- January at which time I put them in a warm room under grow lights. They grew quickly, and I was harvesting stems 6 weeks later. I staggered when I took them out if the cooler, and they all worked very well, with the last ones being harvested now. Some of you saw these appear in your pottery arrangements. If I can find space, I will grow more next year! #bleedinghearts

I love living here, and being in tune with nature! Spring is definitely arriving, and the Canadian geese are announcing it! How awesome to stand under thousands of them flying overhead and just soak it in. Be sure to turn your sound on!

Let’s change up the tulip feed and go back in time! In 1910, in the Netherlands, my great grandfather began a business selling canned vegetables and eventually shipping them throughout Europe. My grandfather would have been 7 years old, with other siblings. He eventually took over his father’s business. The business survived two world wars, but was devastated by the Great Flood of 1953, as they lived in the hardest hit area. (Google it!)In less than half a year, my grandfather, his wife, and 9 children emigrated to Canada. My mother designed this art quilt which is a reproduction of many of the original Dutch canning labels. Perhaps horticultural business management is in my genetics?? Whether that is true or not, this part of my family tree has a rich heritage and I am thrilled with my mother’s handiwork!

Why do tulips in snow look so good? Rain is coming, and soon the earth will be bare again. I am sharing the last of tulips-in-the-snow pictures for 2021 (at least I hope we don’t have snow in May!) I had a fantastic run with forced tulips this winter, harvesting for 9 weeks straight. Thank you from the bottom of my !

Delivering more tulips to the Noshery in downtown Brockville today. Be sure to protect them from the cold! There are also some pottery arrangements available in my web store. Take a look! #shoplocal

Some of the tulips that have gone out this week. A reminder in this bitter cold to protect the flowers, and bring them to a warm vehicle when you are picking them up. Locally Grown!

Powerhouse colour combo! I will never tire of tulips and the incredible array of choices I have to grow. These five varieties came together excellently and you will love them! I currently have a wait list for Valentine’s tulips. Let me know if you need any!

This special arrangement is for someone recovering from surgery. I make one-of-a-kind arrangements using handmade Riverbank pottery and whatever seasonal flowers I have on hand. Your response to local tulips has been absolutely amazing, and I am SOLD OUT for the weekend. There is now a waiting list for Valentine’s Day next weekend, as I do not know 100% what will be ready. ... If you would like to reserve flowers and be on my wait list, please go to my website and use the contact form. (Link in bio). Have a great weekend everyone, and thank you for your incredible support!

This is going to take awhile!! A wheelbarrow full of narcissus bulbs to plant! There are about 850 in here, and I do not plant them in neat tidy rows, but rather along the edge of our woodland where they get early spring sun. I don’t have to worry about them taking up gardening space, and they will be enjoyed for generations to come! I may need an extra visit to the chiropractor though! All our flowers are planted and seeded by hand. #labouroflove #narcissusflower #fieldtovase #woodlandplanting #townshipofaugusta

Field grown ranunculus in October! I have been trialling these for a few seasons using different methods and timings. Although this batch had a lot of loss, I have now figured out what needs to be done to bring this spectacular colour to you in the fall. This variety is Elegance Giallo, and they are so cheery!

Flowers of the Field 09.10.2020

#notetoself- Grow more roses! These Gentle Hermione roses are still putting on a show IN OCTOBER! Roses are so costly to grow- first for the plant itself, and then for all the labour and care to ward off diseases and insects. But if you could smell this right now you would understand why I am still smitten! The vast majority of cut flower roses that you buy in Canada are imported from across the world, and come dry in boxes, often with chemical treatments to prolong their ...longevity. Many brides had no roses this summer, and it will be interesting to see what Valentine’s will look like in a few months. But what do you think? If you had to pay more for a locally grown rose with more thorns, more scent, and several days of vase life without chemicals would you buy them? Should I grow more roses to sell stems to you? #informal survey #roses #fieldgrownroses #leedsgrenville See more

The moon has been so bright this month! I took this photo because the flowerstand was lit up and you could easily walk around in the country with no supplemental light. But the camera picked up the plants in the foreground instead and the result is pretty amazing! You can still see the flowerstand if you look hard enough! This is the last week for mums & asters and they are on SALE! There are also sunflower bunches and tulip bulbs available. It has been a fantastic season and I thank you for supporting this small local business!

There has a lot of anxiety in our area surrounding Covid this week. Please know that the Market has been working closely with the healthy unit to keep us operational. There has been so much loss in 2020- health, life, income and more. I suppose this is not so unusual. Every year of every decade of every century contains heartache and grief, oppression and injustice, fear and calamity. But somehow we endure, the animals and plants go through their cycles and life goes on. All year round, I am working hard to bring you joy, beauty, and comfort in the form of flowers. We all need it. Flowers are #foodforthesoul This busy bee caught my attention in the September light- a tiny, sophisticated being working hard at living. Really, it’s an inspirational example on how to live. Isn’t that beautiful? Take a deep breath today, take a close look at something in nature, and marvel at the beauty that persists no matter what the newsfeed says. #townshipofaugusta

Pre-frost and covered flowers are looking fine! There are only a few bunches available to bring into your house but the flowerstand is open! We also have mums, asters, sunflowers, and pumpkins to decorate your porch with! Drive out to Lords Mills Road- Google says we are only 13 minutes from downtown Brockville!

Flowers of the Field 23.07.2020

Hard frost has come! It’s about 3 weeks early this year, and as much as I like to coax things along and have season extension, at some point I just have to accept things as they are. It may be the end of fresh cut flowers for a few months, but not the end of my business and planning. Please keep supporting local farmers as the weather turns. Months of planning and preparation both outdoors and behind the computer go into having field grown flowers. Coming up will be pumpkins , dried grasses and flowers, and then we move into Christmas and Valentine flowers! Sign up for emails on my website (link in bio) to stay informed!

I had the privilege to work on the wedding flowers for this beautiful lady in August! What a treat! Having had to change their wedding plans dramatically due to the global pandemic, this couple and their family members sourced local tableware and brass from thrift shops, dyed their own fabric napkins, made banquet tables, prepared gourmet food, and did so much more to prepare for a day surrounded by love and beauty on the grounds of an old stone farmhouse. #locallygrownflowers was part of this! Congratulations M&M!

Flowers of the Field 24.04.2020
