Daydreams and imagination may just be illusions, but they’re still a key part of what it is to be human. Daydreaming and allowing our minds to wander are key traits of creativity, so sometimes it's beneficial to let go of the reigns of focus and control when floating or meditating to see just where your thoughts lead you.

Dear friends, The province-wide lockdown starting Saturday alters things for us at Flow Spa and here’s what you need to know: We are permitted to reopen by our local health department on Monday following the break this weekend for therapeutic uses of float tanks only. ... This means that we will require a note from a regulated health professional, like your doctor, chiropractor, or physiotherapist, before we can book you in for an appointment during the lockdown. This note should state the therapeutic reasons you are floating, e.g. pain relief, anxiety reduction, for stress and mental health, etc. Because we have to abide by these rules, the online booking system is currently switched off and so please call or send an email when you’re looking to book in over the next couple of weeks. Also, for anyone who thinks they’ll have a hard time getting a doctor’s note, please let me know and I’ll do what I can to help you out with it. Happy Holidays and Stay Safe! And for those who are being cautious and staying home during this time, the Healthy, Happy, and Stress-free at Home course is FREE and available on the Flow Academy website at flowacademy.ca We've also got more at-home wellness content for you coming up this week!

Meditation and Mindfulness as a Regular Practice Why the superpower of meditation is not what you might expect. We all have access to the superpower that is meditation but the reality is, it is a long, drawn out one. ... It's not like getting a radioactive spider bite and suddenly having your Spidey Sense tingling and super strength. It is the continued practice over time that builds up this mindset overhaul, so that you can handle more stress and overcome greater adversity. Longer mindfulness sessions and floats are great for kicking into a higher gear and seeing the potential that you have waiting within you. But doing what it manageable for you is needed for the key of consistency. Don't think that starting when you need it most is going to suddenly change your life for the better. Day by day you'll see your fuse get longer and more resilient for the next time that stress hits. Keep up the great work

What do you float for the most? I've heard floating be described as massage and therapy all rolled up into one warm and cozy embrace and experience. A lot of stuff gets worked out in the float tank, both physically and mentally. ... To set your mind and body at ease the way floating does is hard to find right now but oh, so important. For me, it's a lot of these benefits all rolled up into one. Relieving the pain that comes from heavy training and replenishing the magnesium lost from sweating is always useful for me but lately, with the external pressures, we're all seeing from negative news and the uncertainty around us, returning to float to escape everything and settle the mind has been key. Image is originally from our 11 Benefits of Floating article found on the Flow Spa website.

Finding serenity sounds nice right about now, doesn’t it? As we’ve struggled through 2020, it can seem like a faraway dream to find serenity now. With so much uncertainty, it’s difficult to tune out and relax to focus on the present, even though it’s one of the most important things we can do for ourselves right now.... We have to remember to focus on what’s in our own control and what we can have an impact on when the world feels so chaotic. And one of the things we can make a positive impact on is taking better care of ourselves. Finding our own sense of serenity and taking care of our mental health through positive routines is something we can and should control, especially at this time. Meditation is a superpower that we have as humans. My friend Tony made a great observation that we typically turn to wellness practices like meditation only when we're already anxious or feeling out of sorts. It's true that we most often need to meditate, or escape further into nature, a float, or a massage when we are feeling the chaos the most but that also comes down to what was already going on within our mind. ... We can better prepare ourselves to be resilient to the external pressure by regularly clearing space for it and accepting what we can and cannot control. Our ego, for example, is something that we often forget about keeping in check but is certainly within our control to lighten up and not be so serious about. As Sam Harris says about meditation, "the real superpower is not just managing the ego more mindfully but discovering the ego has no actual substance." When we practice mindfulness or meditate, we are putting in the work to recognize the moments of stillness around us, and even talk of "substance-less egos" doesn't have to make it complicated. Simply focus very intently for a few minutes on anything - the work you're doing, your breath, snowflakes in the air, or imagine a candle flame in front of you. Sometimes when you're struggling with focus you can also do the complete opposite and let your mind wander aimlessly for your meditation. This type of mind-wandering practice helps with creativity and piecing together different ideas, so sometimes it helps to be less rigid with your mindfulness practice. How often are you practicing this superpower?

How To Stop The Doomscrolling- Mindful Consumption of News and Negative Media Have you found yourself droomscrolling a lot lately? All of us have been stuck in that negative loop our fair share this year. Doomscrolling is the name that has been given to the compulsion to scroll through and consume negative news on social media.... When you keep refreshing and going through your feed to see what other bad news pops up, it becomes a behaviour that we reactively want to repeat even though it negatively impacts our feelings of well-being through leading to a greater risk of anxiety and depression. So what can we do about it? https://www.flowspa.ca/blog/how-to-stop-the-doomscrolling

Giving your mind the chance to rest is like letting the ripples on water settle. While floating last night my mind had a thousand thoughts being thrown at it all at once. Being okay with that is the only way the storm will settle. Knowing it's normal for your mind to race is half the battle. ... Just as we can't continue to push physically forever without needing the time to recover. Our minds react the same way to the efforts that we put in on a daily basis. When your mind has the chance to rest and recharge it is one of the best ways to keep going when things feel like they are too hard. Practicing mindfulness by not always letting busy-ness occupy your mind is one of the simplest ways to let the ripples settle. How are you doing with giving your mind a break lately?

Flow Spa 09.10.2020

Have you found yourself droomscrolling a lot lately? All of us have been stuck in that negative loop our fair share this year. Doomscrolling is the name that has been given to the compulsion to scroll through and consume negative news on social media. So what can we do about it?... First off, it’s important to recognize the problem. When COVID-19 first hit back in the spring and as all the certainty in the world started to shift, I found myself constantly watching the news for updates and refreshing my Facebook feed. I didn’t realize it at first, but this was leading me to a heightened state of anxiety and generally not feeling very good. Recognizing that you’re doomscrolling is a great first step to getting it under control and reducing that stress and tension on yourself. To avoid constant doomscrolling throughout the day set up time blocks where you allow yourself to check the news and get on social media. I like to do this for myself at 10:30 am and 4:30 pm for half an hour at most. Just about every device out there now has an app that can notify you when you reach a time limit for access to certain social media apps or websites. I use Freedom to block me out of all email apps and social media sites in the morning so that I can focus on important tasks and projects without the distraction of inboxes. Since I know that there’s no way around Freedom’s block on my internet access, I have no choice but to focus on my work or sit there and twiddle my thumbs. One of the best things you can do to avoid that doomscrolling altogether is by eradicating it. Facebook Newsfeed Eradicator takes away your newsfeed and replaces it with an inspirational quote. You can batch your content and schedule it to go out when you want so that you’re not needing to load up a social media app and possibly get caught in a doomscroll when you go to share something that you have created.

I've been doing various gratitude practices for a number of years now and from personal experience combined with the research on high-performance psychology, I know the massive impact that it can have on states of optimism and quality of life. Gratitude and giving thanks may be something that we tend to reserve for certain times of the year but it doesn't have to be that way.... So while you may be gathering with close family this upcoming weekend either in person or from afar virtually, here are a few ways I have found that you can give thanks and feel it deeply while also maybe making it more of a regular practice for yourself. , ' One of the things that I often don't do well enough is taking the time to embody the feelings of gratitude. There's a big difference in the experience when we take a moment and actually think and feel the thanks we are giving instead of just saying it and continuing along on our train of thought or going about our day. Take a moment to feel all of the sensations that come with what you are thankful for. , , We often get stuck with gratitude practices losing their power when we always write down or reflect on the same things. The easiest way to overcome this is to take one minute to reflect on something in the past, something in the present moment you are grateful for, and then something down the road for you that you are looking forward to. By writing the things you are grateful for down you help your brain integrate both left and right hemispheres in the practice instead of just thinking about it. When you do this you'll feel it deeper and when you're looking forward to future things, it will also prime your subconscious to look for opportunities to make it happen. The other advantage is that by writing it down, you’ll have this amazing bank of good memories to turn back to when you’re feeling stuck or lost in your ways. Cheers!

This is why we are plunging into cold water and practicing breathwork and honing stronger mindsets for healthier immune systems. I know we are all treading carefully and doing our best in staying safe and healthy right now. Taking care to keep stress under control and boost the immune system are two of the biggest factors that are under our control for performing our best and staying healthy for ourselves and our loved ones. ... And while we’ve known for a long time that doing small things like eating our veggies and taking our vitamins and minerals will help to keep our immune system topped up, it’s only been in the last handful of years that research was able to demonstrate that we have much more control of the autonomic processes of the immune system than we originally thought. You see, this charismatic, wiry-haired, and often caked in ice, gentlemen from the Netherlands by the name of Wim Hof has brought to the forefront of Western medicine and research the power that we have to control our bodies in ways that we thought were impossible. You may know him as the Iceman from some of the documentaries or podcasts that he’s been on. And he’s become a global sensation through setting world records for the furthest distance to swim under the ice in the arctic circle (without a wet suit on too) or for hiking mountains in just a pair of shorts, and staying submerged in ice water for over an hour without his core body temperature changing at all! But some of the most incredible feats have to do with the control of his immune system, and Wim has demonstrated that he can train others to gain more control over the immune system in the same way with his breathing techniques. Researchers injected Hof and his disciples with cold endotoxins which normally immediately induce fever, chills, and muscle pains, and all of the subjects were able to completely suppress the symptomatic through breathing alone. We have more control over the autonomic processes of our body than we thought. And so if you want to turbocharge your immune system with these techniques and learn this breathwork for yourself message us or comment below to get in on the October 18 event. @iceplunge.ash

Let's face it, we are all very stressed right now. While we are adapted to handle stress the not-so-good news is that stress has become pervasive in our lives lately and it is causing more problems than we can even imagine. That headache that won't go away and the shoulders that are stuck and hunched forward.... Stress often expresses itself in the body as tension being held in certain areas. Some of us hold onto stress in different ways. But when we physically lock up due to stress, it becomes very painful physically as well as limiting in many other ways. It’s unbelievable how relaxing the float tank experience is. Many people are blown away by where they hold stress they didn’t even know about. This awareness while deeply comfortable is very effective for releasing tension and letting the clutch off of holding on to that tension physically and mentally. When you come out of the float tank, you feel like a brand new human. Making it a part of your regular routine for treating your stress and pain can be a radical shift in your well-being.

When going through stressful and uncertain times it can be very helpful to stay positive through working on gratitude. Practicing gratitude is incredibly powerful for living more positively and generating optimism. While you don't need to write down the things you are grateful for, journaling can be a useful way to embody the feelings of gratitude deeper. I find that a 3-step gratitude is the best way to create balance with the practice. If we always think about gratitude in... the same way every time it loses some of its emotional charge. Combining Past, Present, and Future into your gratitude practice is a way to create more balance. 1. Start by pulling on a past peak experience. Let it fill you up with happiness and gratitude. It may be a wedding, a trip you took, or the first time you met a pet. 2. Use that energy to bring yourself into the present and focus on something small in your immediate environment that you can be grateful for. Now visualize a future event or goal that you are looking forward to. You can even envision it having already been accomplished or experienced. Fitting this into your schedule each day takes less than 5 minutes and will compound over time into seeing things more optimistically. See more

The year 2020 has not been an easy one for the naturally optimistic and that much harder if you’re trying to become more optimistic but tend to see the world from a negative perspective. The best of the best, those performers we call world-class, are universally a class that believes that things will work out in the end. And this holds true despite the doomsday prophesies, quarantines, and political outrages. The good news is that the trait of optimism is trainable if this is...n’t normally how your mindset operates. Here are a few of the best ways that you can start to shift towards becoming more optimistic or further harness this characteristic if it’s already a part of your personality. The first practice is to set your intention to become more optimistic. The question that you are trying to answer for yourself with intention setting is: Why do you want to become more optimistic? Now that you’ve set the intention that you will become more optimistic, you need to train the brain to pick out the positive things each you experience each and every day. Everyone faces tragedy but what we know is that optimistic people seek out ways to turn that tragedy into triumph. It’s not about saying that everything is always going to work out perfectly as much as it’s about recognizing what’s in your control and what is not and working on staying focused on what you can control when bad things do happen to you. ' Most of us don't breathe well and it's making us stressed and sick. Breathing has been called a lost art because properly breathing can have a dramatic impact on our health and well-being. ... To correct the patterns of something we do 25,000 times per day takes a lot of effort though. Making it as simple as possible is the key. These practices are built around the habits that we already have in our lives which will simplify the process and make it highly intuitive and automatic to complete with no added effort. . Set up trigger alarms in your phone to remind you multiple times per day to check in on your breath. It’s a good idea to start with at least 3 or 4 times per day. So you could have your alarms set for first thing in the morning or just after breakfast time, late morning or early afternoon, after work, and before bed. . Another way to make checking in with your breath more automatic is to anchor it to habits that you already have. This is known as habit stacking. As an example, you can spend a minute slowing your breathing through your nose each time you finish washing your hands or after brushing your teeth. We all have unique habits but think about what habits you have every day that can serve as a starting point for checking in on your breath. . Create a hard set rule for yourself that you will check in on your breath at certain times of the day. This could include times like during your morning commute, at your lunch break, or before you get out of your car after work. . Create a wallpaper for your phone that has "breathe" on there as a reminder. It can serve as a nice little reminder for you and once you’ve already started working on the habit, every time you see the note on your phone you can also question what purpose you are checking your phone for so that you’re also approaching your devices with more mindfulness.

With the long weekend approaching and as we head back into a more stressful and busy season, something that we all can do better is to unplug from our digital devices for a bit and disconnect. We are constantly wired to feeling the need to always be on and at everyone's beck and call, often at the expense of our own state of calm. When we give ourselves time for digital detox, we help to reset our brains from the constant craving for more. This can allow us to better relax ...and refresh our minds before things start to get crazy. So plan ahead for when you can practice some screen off time this weekend. Maybe it feels too stressful to do a full day away from your devices but even try scheduling off a morning or afternoon this weekend whether you're going to get out in nature for some solitude or spend the time with friends and family.
