This was made at the amazing @pillchuckglasssschool in Washington. I was the lucky recipient of a grant to take a class with Jason @gorillaglass. He mentoured me and gave me the opportunity to work with his skilled workers in Oaxaca Mexico. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to go to his amazing hime after studying at Pilchuck and work on this glass line. You can see some of the work we made in my vertex pendants. How amazing is this. Finally!!! Some one In charge of a city got the memo. BLACK LIVES MATTER! Maybe thats all I need to say. But I would like to say more. It deeply saddens me to be an adult in 2020 and see so much hate and disregard for a fellow human being because of the colour of their skin. To be honest it kinda blows my mind that so many people are so selfish and racist still. When speaking with my friend she explained what it feels like being from a South African... family living in white suburbia Victoria. I remember in grade 4 our teacher told her to turn off the water to the tap when she was washing her paint brushes because didnt she know that people in her country didnt have enough water to drink. A simple please turn off the tap would have been sufficient dont you think. Even as a child I knew that was a horrible thing to say to a 9 year old kid. I remember thinking This is her country. Why because of the colour of her skin is Canada not her home. Its suppose because I dont think about people by race but by how and who they are it never occurred to me being a white womanizer in a white Caucasian country how much racism she still lives with. That the thing with being white. You tend not to notice and not on purpose its because its not happening to you on a daily basis. I suppose what I took from it is to remember that even though Victoria is pretty multicultural and forward thinking we still need to work so much harder on breaking the boundaries of culture and skin colour. I will ask my self today how can I make someone with another culture and another way of life than my own feel at home and safe in their own country, city, home.
