THE STAREDOWN It was more intense than Tyson's glare at Spink's and some would argue as dramatic as the Ali / Foreman staredown. The moment had no paparazzi or HBO world wide audience, no social media hype... This was Mezzie the sparrow and Donald Downy, aka 'The Don', perched eye to eye, beaks forward, like 2 gunslingers ready to strike!... Birds from St.Bonifiace through River Heights know it simply as 'The Staredown'. Bird's eye accounts recall Mezzie and her sparrow mates discovering a tree which had what one described "A magical wand stuffed with a treat like no other". It was a beautiful morning, the sun was shining, a gentle breeze, 3 to 4 birds chowing at a time. Then, in an instant the party was over! The Don charged at the 'wand' with crazy eyes, wings a blazin' and and all the sparrows immediately flew away....but not Mezzie!! "I see no 'Downys only' sign", I aint goin' NO-WHERE". Mezzie stood her perch, glared at the Don until he gave in and the birds ate the tucker in harmony! The story of Mezzie staring down The Don will be told by fellow sparrows, chickadees and even woodpeckers for generations!
