Happy #WorldWaterDay! We’re celebrating the amazing work of First Nations across BC to protect and restore water. There are MANY important Indigenous-led initiatives happening throughout the province, and we wanted to highlight a few from the past year: 1 - Esdilagh First Nation in Tilhqot’in territory enacted the Elhdaqox Dechen Ts’edilhtan Law to ensure that Elhdaqox (Fraser River) is managed and protected in accordance with Tilhqot’in dechen ts’edilhtan. See more inf...o here: http://www.esdilagh.com//Esdilagh%20Elhdaqox%20Law%20Final 2 - The Koksilah Watershed Water Sustainability Plan Scoping Initiative was established by a new government-to-government relationship between Cowichan Tribes and the BC Government. It recognizes the equal authority and distinct legal traditions and responsibilities each partner brings to the table. The Steering Committee is guided by appointed advisors from POLIS Water Sustainability Project, the University of Victoria Environmental Law Centre, the Cowichan Watershed Board, and the BC Freshwater Legacy Initiative. For more information or to get involved visit https://www.koksilahwater.ca/ 3 - The Blueprint for restoring ecological governance to the Lower Fraser River (Blueprint for Resilience) was established by the Lower Fraser Fisheries Alliance, Raincoast Conservation Foundation, Martin Conservation Decisions Lab at the University of British Columbia, and West Coast Environmental Law to establish Indigenous-led and community-driven governance to foster long-term ecological resilience through ecosystem-based management of the Lower Fraser River and estuary, and the species and people that rely on it. Read more about their five key principles at https://www.taramartin.org//Blueprint-for-resilience-backg Thank you to these organizations for your leadership on protecting water! Leave us a comment and let us know which other Indigenous-led projects you'd like us to highlight next. #WorldWaterDay2021 Tsilhqot'in National Government Esdilagh First Nation POLIS Water Sustainability Project West Coast Environmental Law Environmental Law Centre, University of Victoria UBC Faculty of Forestry Lower Fraser Fisheries Alliance Raincoast Conservation Foundation Cowichan Watershed Board Cowichan Tribes Government of British Columbia
