Hiawatha First Nation prepares to vote on law to take control over how its lands are used Since 2018, the community, located about 100 kilometres east of Toronto, has been developing a land code policy. "We're the stewards of the land; we need to be the ones to make the decisions in order to protect and have access to it for future generations," said Krystal Cowie, a Hiawatha band member who is planning on voting to approve the land code. ... Hiawatha councillor Jeff Loucks, who holds the portfolio for lands, said approving the land code would be transformative, removing the community also known as Mississaugas of Rice Lake from under the Indian Act when it comes to decisions related to land use and returning responsibility of Hiawatha lands back to its citizens. https://www.cbc.ca//hiawatha-first-nation-land-code-1.5998
