Get packing your kitchen! . . It was early morning, I had been dead asleep awoken to the door bell. Given my role at the College, it was not uncommon for students to show up needing to chat so my assumption was this is what was going to be waiting on the other side of the door. .... . Instead it was my brother carrying a sledge hammer, and my sister-in law. And he didn’t make it too far into the house before he started to swing it at the walls. . . I had been dreaming of renovating my little townhouse, but as a single person in my first home I didn’t have the ability to do so. That was until my family showed up to do it for me. . . My brother and sister-in law are incredibly talented home builders, and had decided to move in and complete the renovation in a week. The whole family was involved as my Mom took the kids so they could focus entirely. . . The week was intense! They fully took out my kitchen and then rebuilt it using the existing cabinets, they also fully renovated my main bathroom at the same time. The whole house was painted from top to bottom, and after numerous trips to restore and refurbishment stores we found appliances and all we needed. . . This gift of turning my house into my home was incredible! . . No longer was I living in the space dreaming, instead I had a home I was proud of and loved to be in. . . I remember the transformation with so much gratitude and appreciation. You only get to experience owning your first home and making it your own, and it is an experience you will remember forever. . . Welcome to the black hole of home ownership . . That was the title of the book a friend dropped on my desk after hearing I had just purchased my first home. A common thread amongst those I have as friends is a great sense- of humour, ilbit dark at times! .... . I had spent the past number of years living in the college dormitory as the Residential Director. It was how the college had created a salary for me, my job description was comprised of Athletic Director, basketball Coach, Residential Director, and Associate Dean. . . Over the past 2 years I had completed my Master’s of Arts in Leadership and now joining the Faculty meant I could get a mortgage and move out of the dorms! . . As a single woman the process of buying seemed really overwhelming. I was on my own make the decision and it seemed like a really really big one! What if I chose wrong? . . I was referred to a REALOR who was a friend of a friend. He was patient, he gave me advise, he talked me through the whole process so I understood what was going on and what was coming up next. . . He accommodated the requests to show my brother the house to get him to stamp off, and even made arrangements to get my parents in to see it after the deal was firm so that I could share my excitement with them. . . Never did he make me feel like I was asking stupid questions or wasting his time. . . I can clearly remember the emotions and the signing of the documents, the roller coaster that is first time home ownership! . . I think of this experience every time I have the honour of helping people purchase their first homes. Sometimes they need me to be the other set of eyes, sometimes I’m the big sister or Aunt helping them feel like they’re not alone in the process. Other times I’m the one bringing the outside perspective so they can weigh the pros and cons before they make the decision. . . It is truly my goal that each one has an experience like mine. It’s a new year! Set your goals high and start working towards them now. #MotivationMonday

It has been a hard week. I am ok. I’ve been processing a lot. Letting go of so many emotions and feelings. Realizing what has been lost and could be lost with all that is going on....... I’m coming to realize that I have been given this strange gift. The gift of time. The gift of being truly free. Suspend the pressures and requirements of regular life. And the gift of getting back to what matters. And from that evaluate everything. This past week was hard very difficult for me, and filled with anxiety. BUT I knew I was feeling this strange gratitude and peace that didn’t make sense. And this morning as the boys were biking at 6:30am...Dexter asked me to play a song on YouTube. He kept singing ‘it’s a beautiful day ‘. I played what I thought the song was and he said ‘no mummy that’s not it!’ I typed beautiful day in and this song came up. I don’t remember ever hearing it before but Dexter immediately said ‘yup that’s it’ and starts to sing along. As I stood listening to him sing, and watching them ride the bikes in the stillness that is now our world, I was struck by a few thoughts. The first, that I was not alone. The second, that this truly is a gift if I take advantage of it. Life as I knew it has been suspended, and probably won’t be the same again. That’s a good thing I believe. I have the opportunity to pivot I have the opportunity to grow I have the opportunity to evaluate my priorities and place the value where i truly value. Take a moment, enjoy the silence, the stillness and breath. What are the gifts you have been given in this chaos?
