It's that time of year again when Condé Nast Traveler invites travel enthusiasts to show their love for favourite destinations, properties, and experiences, in the 2021 Readers' Choice Awards. There are multiple categories, where you can show your appreciation. We encourage you to vote in all those that resonate as a way of celebrating the people and places who have made your travels exceptional. https://buff.ly/2GJuft Alex Fradkin
Our communities came to be thanks to a centuries-old heritage of fishing, but on Fogo Island we're also resourceful gardeners, hunters, foragers and berry pickers. Bottling, preserving, and root cellaring have long ensured we have plenty locally harvested foods to see us through the winter months. While the dishes we serve at Fogo Island Inn are contemporary and playful, they honour Fogo Island's culinary traditions and local ingredients. We are proud that our kitchen team was featured in a new cookbook of recipes and stories from Canada's Atlantic Coast, "A Rising Tide." Created by Emily Lycopolus and DL Acken Photography (and published by Appetite by Random House ), this love letter to East Coast cuisine will be in book stores April 27.
If you spent time within our walls, you likely were greeted by the wagging tails and drooling faces of our loveable nuisances, Make and Break. We are very sad to share that our sweet Make, the black Newfoundland dog, passed away this week at the age of 9. She embodied the true essence of Newfoundland, from her breed to her warm, friendly, and loyal nature. Without fail, her daily visits brought comfort to our guests and smiles to our faces. We’d love to hear your memories of our gentle giant, Make.
Here's a glimpse of what some of our colleagues have been up to on Fogo Island over the winter: enjoying trips to the cabin with family and pets, spending days on snowmobiles, and relishing in the serenity of our winter season. We currently have career opportunities open on our growing team including several positions within Fogo Island Inn, Community Engagement Coordinator with Shorefast, and Furniture Maker with The Woodshop on Fogo Island. Visit the Shorefast "Careers" page for more information: https://shorefast.org/about-us/#careers Photos submitted by team members Gail P, Colleen B, Jeanette N, and John P.
With optimism, ushering in the new year...

While you won't find us behind the Inn's bar this Tibb's Eve, we hope you're snug at home mixing up your own festive cocktails. Here's a recipe of ours that's just right for the season: The Squish Cocktail Ingredients: 2 ounces Newfoundland Distillery Cloudberry Gin 8 partridgeberries (cranberries can be substituted)... 1 ounce birch syrup (maple syrup can be substituted) 1/2 ounce heavy cream 1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice 1 fresh egg white Birch beer, to top (ginger ale can be substituted) Method: Muddle first 3 ingredients in a shaker. Add next 3 ingredients to shaker. Shake hard, without ice, for a few minutes. Add ice (3/4 full) to shaker. Reseal the shaker and shake for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Strain into a collins glass, no ice. Top with birch beer. Garnish with sugared Partridgeberries. by Hé Photographes See more
On the winter solstice, we light our Christmas tree for the first time to celebrate the incoming lengthening days and the optimism that accompanies the return of light
Fogo Island is one of the four corners of the flat earth, an island off an island, and far away from far away... More than ever before, we'll be drawn to "off the beaten path" retreats when travel resumes. https://enroute.aircanada.com//travel/off-the-beaten-path/

What's on your weekend menu? #flashbackfriday to this kitchen creation from the fall of last year: local pickled mackerel with preserved tomatoes. by Signe Birck
Late Fall is a highly atmospheric season on Fogo Island. An early first dusting of snow has come and gone, and we're soaking in the vibrancy of the scarlet-leaved blueberry bushes, dew-soaked mosses, and nearly neon lichens that will continue to punctuate our landscape for some time yet. by Alex Fradkin
Another well-deserved accolade for our friends at Saunders Architecture was presented yesterday evening at the Gray Magazine GRAY awards as Jeanne Gang announced that the Fogo Island Shed won the Architecture Commercial category. We can't wait to reanimate our beloved Shed with phenomenal food and even better stories. by Iwan Baan and Scott Ramsay, 2019
Yesterday brought this year's first significant snowfall to Fogo Island - an early one which may or may not stick around. But one thing seems certain: the caribou have emerged from their inland summer sojourn and are once again being spotted out and about in our communities, including at one of their favourite local "restaurants": the soccer field

November ushers in our Late Fall season. Wild, wonderful weather is the backdrop to this time of change and winter preparation. The wind may feel like it's blowing in 36 directions at once, but it also has a tendency to iron out all of life's wrinkles in the process... by http://coffeeabroad.com/
"Merci" to our friends at Mixte Magazine for featuring Fogo Island Inn as their recent cover story. Read the online version of the article here: https://www.mixtemagazine.ca//the-fogo-island-inn-a-hotel/
If we hadn't already, most of us have found the opportunity this year to better acquaint ourselves with the local. As experienced practitioners in the social business space, we couldn't be happier that more and more people are increasing their awareness of "where the money goes" and making conscious purchases that support people and planet. Our sister business, The Woodshop on Fogo Island, recently released a gift guide full of their ethically-made, community-supporting goods. Bring a piece of Fogo Island to your home or the home of a loved one: View the gift guide: https://buff.ly/3jIvYxw Visit the Woodshop's website: https://buff.ly/2ES8eWl
Best wishes to our friends in the USA celebrating Thanksgiving today... sending greetings from us, and from the caribou
This year's Berry Season may be drawing to a close, but that's the thing about seasons... they cycle out, and they're also bound to cycle back in. From us and the partridgeberries... wishing a Happy Thanksgiving to our Canadian friends
"We built the Inn to help make a contribution to cultural and economic resilience for Fogo Island. It seemed, in thinking about where we’re come from and what we have as an island to offer, an Inn seemed like the most logical way to achieve both [it’s] an opportunity to knit together a whole bunch of things that otherwise might have been lost." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mb8qpKRjdTk&t=130s Those interested in Fogo Island Inn and Shorefast's Fogo Island work have another opportunity to hear our story and ask questions on Tuesday, October 6 as Innkeeper Zita Cobb will be speaking as part of the virtual PEI Business Women's Association symposium. For most of us, this year has felt like riding out an ocean storm. Here on Fogo Island, we’ve been steering the course as we implement new standards in line with the changing travel landscape and ready ourselves for the eventual return of a more regular rhythm to life. While we haven’t been able to welcome guests to the Inn since the imposition of the COVID-19-related travel restrictions, we’re so excited to be accepting reservations for stays beginning on or after March 11, ...2021. With wellness offerings, snowbound adventures, remote coastal spring hiking, magical moving icescapes, summer wildflowers, and an inevitably decadent berry season all in the cards for the future, we’ll continue to pioneer our singular brand of holistic sustainability by offering a deep immersion in place for those seeking regenerative remoteness and community connection. You can get in touch with our team anytime to enquire and to book using the contact information available at fogoislandinn.ca. We can’t wait to reconnect with all of you and welcome you back to Fogo Island’s still-wild world which of our seven seasons will you plan to immerse yourself in next? See more
