Looking for a uniquely sweet treat to try tonight? Vivian’s Ba Bao Fan recipe is just what you need! Ba Bao Fan (also sometimes known as rice pudding or Eight-Treasure Glutinous Rice Pudding) is a traditional Chinese dish popular in Southern China. It’s made of sweetened glutinous rice with red bean paste, and decorated with a variety of toppings (hence, the name eight-treasure). Although we don’t traditionally celebrate Christmas as part of Chinese culture, this dish is... eaten during Chinese New Year. This recipe is based on the way my grandparents have always made Ba Bao Fan in my family. Chinese cooking doesn’t typically use recipes, so the measurements are fairly lax and can be adjusted to preference. The end result should be a hearty and sweet dome-shaped dish. Vivian Shen Find the recipe on folklorama.ca or click here: https://523.0d0.myftpupload.com//Ba-Bao-Fan-Recipe-Card.pdf

Bharatanatyam - India School of Dance, Music & Theatre Bharatanatyam is an ancient form of classical Indian dance, originating from the Hindu Temples of Tamil Nadu, India. It is characterised by unique hand gestures, intricate footwork, and emotive and dramatic facial expressions. This form of dance demands physical, mental, and spiritual growth from its disciple and is truly a full body and mind experience! Meet a performer: Melanie William... I have found dance to be a much-needed creative outlet. It gives me the chance to express myself in ways that words do not allow for. Growing up in Canada, dance has also offered me the opportunity to remain connected to my cultural roots and Folklorama, specifically, in its mission to promote multiculturalism and diversity has helped me to feel supported, comfortable and proud to be a young person who is both Canadian and Tamil. Through teaching at the India School of Dance, Music and Theatre Inc., I am able to give back to the community that has given me so much by fostering a sense of cultural pride within the next generation of youth. In my youth, my time as a student at the India School facilitated an interest in learning about my cultures music, dance, art and history, as well as developing an appreciation for cultural diversity and differences. It is truly beautiful to see the children I teach going through that same experience. I have found that audiences at Folklorama always love the carefree and lively energy that folk dances add to the show. I began performing in Folklorama in 2003 and have not missed festival week since. Folklorama is an integral part of who I am and I am proud to be a part of such an important mission. I, along with many other Canadian youth, have been inspired to take pride in our cultural roots and engage in the beautiful cultural mosaic that we call home. Thank you Folklorama for ensuring that youth in Manitoba have a voice and a way to express their cultural identity. Connect with India School of Dance, Music & Theatre!
