NATURE APR 30, 2021 Scientists train a computer to learn like a human... By Sara Rigby A team of researchers has created a device that can make connections over time, and taught it to associate a flash of light with pressure. Now, a team of researchers at Northwestern University and the University of Hong Kong have developed a device that can learn over time in the same way, mimicking a human brain. This technology could be more energy-efficient than traditional computers, the scientists say, and can even continue to run smoothly when some components fail. The brain has synapses which connect neurons together and pass messages between them using chemicals called neurotransmitters. Strengthening the connection between two neurons results in the creation of memory. Inspired by this process, the team developed the ‘synaptic transistor’, an organic, electrochemical device that can trap ions. The ions behave like neurotransmitters, and trapping them allows the transistor to ‘remember’ previous activity. This process allows the device to form connections over time. Physical Review Letters Apr 26, 2021 A two-qubit engine powered by entanglement and local measurements... by Ingrid Fadelli , Phys.org We introduce a two-qubit engine that is powered by entanglement and local measurements. Energy is extracted from the detuned qubits coherently exchanging a single excitation. Generalizing to an N-qubit chain, we show that the low energy of the first qubit can be up-converted to an arbitrarily high energy at the last qubit by successive neighbor swap operations and local measurements. We finally model the local measurement as the entanglement of a qubit with a meter, and we identify the fuel as the energetic cost to erase the correlations between the qubits. Our findings extend measurement-powered engines to composite working substances and provide a microscopic interpretation of the fueling mechanism. Pairing a Mac mini with a dedicated screen instead of buying an iMac will not only save you money for the same computing power, it will future-proof your investment to a much greater degree, too. Let’s start by comparing prices. To get the exact same computing power as you’ll get from the base model Mac mini ($699), you’ll have to pay $1,499 for the mid-range iMac. This gets you an Apple M1 8-core CPU and 8-core GPU, 8GB of memory, and a paltry 256GB of storage. That means you’re paying an $800 premium for the screen and the convenience of the all-in-one form factor, plus the Magic Keyboard that comes with the iMac but not the Mac mini. If you move up the range slightly, to get 512GB of storage - which I would consider the bare minimum for a new computer these days - then the iMac costs $1,699 and the Mac mini is $899. Once again, that’s an $800 premium. Bigger screen, smaller price The iMac comes with a 24in 4.5K Retina display. I’ve not seen one yet, but Apple displays are generally stunning.
