The Sumidero Canyon is a spectacular fissure in the earth, found north of Tuxtla Gutiérrez Mexico, In 1981, the Chicoasén hydroelectric dam was completed at its northern end, damming the Río Grijalva, which flows through the canyon, and creating a 25km-long reservoir. Traveling between Tuxtla and Chiapa de Corzo, the road crosses the Grijalva just south of the canyon mouth. The most impressive way to see the canyon is from a speedboat that speeds between the canyon’s towering... rock walls. What are Cenotes? If you want a textbook definition, they are natural sinkholes or pits formed due to the collapse of limestone bedrock. This exposes the water underneath forming beautiful, ready-to-dive-into pools of clear water. The Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico is most famed for these cenotes. The larger ones in Chichen Itza are popular, with open water pools. These are referred to as caverns as they allow natural light to penetrate.... However, the fun is in finding the smaller, more sheltered ones that have little or no water exposed at the surface, these are generally called cave cenotes. Since cenotes are formed by the dissolution of rocks over time, how big or open the cenote is depends on the amount of erosion of its surrounding rocks. So you can find smaller, circular ponds, partially collapsed ones or completely open ones. Some may require some searching, crawling and stooping until you find the water. The Yucatan Peninsula boasts of having over 6000 different types. Lovingly called El Ángel, the independence monument on Reforma Avenue in Mexico City is an unmistakeable symbol of Mexico’s capital.
