Advent - a very special time for Christians in Poland Today is Advent Sunday also known as First Advent Sunday, which is the fourth Sunday before Christmas... Day. It is the first day of the Advent season in which Christians prepare for the celebration that commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. First day of Advent is also the first day of the new Liturgical Year. Advent is a time of joyful waiting for the coming of Christ, for Christmas Eve and Christmas. In Poland, this is a beautiful time of spiritual preparation for Christmas. For many Poles this is an important time of prayer and penance that remainds a real meaning of Christmas time. The word Advent is from the Latin adventus and means coming. Advent lasts a four weeks, four Sundays preceding Christmas Day. Before in the old tradition it began mid of November, just after St. Martin’s day and lasted 40 days. The symbols of Advent are wreaths and candles. Light shows the way, dispels darkness, removes fear, creates a sense of security. The churches are decorated with wreaths with four candles.
