To be a woman in India is to be vulnerable, and to be a female Dalit, the lowest caste in Indian hierarchical society, is perhaps the least tenable position of all. Imagine the sheer courage behind Khabar Lahariya ("Waves of News"), a hard-hitting all-women Dalit newspaper in Uttar Pradesh. In 2016, chief reporter Meera transitions her team from paper to digital. Whether... they're the only woman in a room of police covering a rape case or staring down the umpteenth mansplainer at a mining protest, these reporters know they are changing perceptions of what women dare do while protecting democracy itself through journalism. Mon documentaire, Les années de Fierro (Los años de Fierro), a commencé comme un projet scolaire. Il constituait ma thèse cinématographique dans le cadre de la maîtrise en cinéma et arts médiatiques, à l’université Temple. Avec le temps, c’est devenu le projet le plus important de ma vie. Je ne voulais pas raconter l’histoire de César et de son frère Sergio uniquement d’un point de vue moral et éthique. En ce qui me concerne, ce n’est pas un film sur la peine de mort, mais ...sur les conséquences de cette injustice sur une famille. En réalisant ce film, j’ai voulu montrer le côté humain de la situation, en traitant les personnages avec respect, mais sans condescendance. La partie la plus difficile de la réalisation de ce film fut le temps limité pendant lequel la prison nous accordait la permission de voir César : une très courte période, tous les 90 jours. Cette politique vise les médias : la rareté et la durée limitée des visites ne favorisent pas la connaissance d’une personne au-delà de son statut de "prisonnier". Ainsi, les autorités carcérales évitent que nous considérions la peine de mort comme une punition infligée à des personnes réelles, au lieu d’une punition réservée aux criminels... Au fil du temps, César, Sergio et les avocats sont devenus des amis. Je ressens un profond respect et une grande admiration pour chacun d’eux. The Years of Fierro (Los Años de Fierro) started as a school project. It was my thesis film for the MFA in Film and Media Arts at Temple University. Over time, it became the most important project I’ve ever taken. I didn’t want to tell César and his brother Sergio’s story only from the moral and ethical point of view. For me this was not a film about the death penalty, but about the effects of injustice on a family. While making the film, I tried to portray the human side ...of it; looking at the characters with respect, but without being condescending. The most difficult part of making this film was the limited amount time that the prison gave us permission to see César a very short period every 90 days. This policy is designed to make it difficult for the media to get to know the person beyond being a prisoner so that we don’t think about the death penalty as a punishment for real people but as a punishment for criminals... Over time César, Sergio and the lawyers have become my friends. I feel profound respect and admiration for all of them. I hope this film helps create awareness about the many ethical and legal problems surrounding the death penalty.
