Experiment with a contemplative photo walk in Lee Bae: UNION. As you enter the exhibition, what are the sounds, colours, textures, shadows, shapes, and other details that catch your eye? Do you observe any connections and contrasts between the artworks and the gallery space? When, and why, are you compelled to look more closely?

As part of our public engagement project "Incandescences", organized in conjunction with the exhibition "Lee Bae: UNION", four artists will propose reactivations of the PHI Foundation’s archives. Our first invited artist, Helena Martin Franco, has been interested in the traces of coloniality found within contemporary institutions. MigrantScape incorporates Thanu Yakupitiyage's interests in storytelling and sound production in a film about the experiences of four immigrants to the United States. In this documentary-style piece about the lives of four people of differing immigration statuses living in New York and El Paso, the piece contends with the individuals' relationship to America's immigration system and increased border militarization. MigrantScape calls on viewers to reflect on the personal tolls that a restrictive, fear-based system creates. During the performance I had a hot metal comb straighten up my hair. Right after this I put my head inside a recipient of cold water to bring my hair to its original state. This action is directed to the sacrifice and pain with the finality of reaching a canon of beauty, canons which are different than we own by nature. Ghosts and spectres lurk throughout the exhibition ‘RELATIONS: Diaspora and Painting’, which brings me to thinking through a spectral logic, in the spirit of Jacques Derrida’s concept of hauntology. I see this as a particularly generative way to (re)think the lived experience of diaspora, by conceptualizing it as a haunting of the individual by the recurrence of their inheritance. Faisant principalement usage de textes et de livres de la période postcoloniale (de 1950 à aujourd’hui), le travail artistique de Michaëlle Sergile a pour vocation de comprendre et de réécrire l’histoire des communautés noires, et plus précisément celle des femmes, par le tissage. L’artiste utilise le lexique du tissage, un médium souvent perçu comme de l’artisanat et catégorisé comme féminin, pour réfléchir aux rapports de domination de genre et d’ethnie.
