Wowzers. I feel like I need to clarify a few things regarding my post last night. If you were like me yesterday, you were slapped in the face nonstop by that bl...ue graphic image. Repeatedly. All day. It was being shared by teachers and by parents and community members. And if you were like me, that image made you sick to your stomach and made you nauseous to imagine a place we all love (school) morphing into an environment as described in that blue graphic. And if you were like me, you had parents reach out to you, panicked asking if it was real and what they should do. Parentsdozens of themworried and fearful and angry. And as I saw that image once again last night followed with parent declarations of I’m homeschooling! and teacher resignations of not being able to work in such an environmentandI just couldn’t stand it any longer. I did something rash. I drew a red slash through that image and shared it. And apparently, it spread like wildfire overnight. This morning I awoke to thousands of shares and comments from all over. And for the most part many teachers and parents reached out to me with a sigh of relief and a general thanks for my perspective. But I also received a healthy share of hate thrown my way. I was accused of hating children and of being a conspiracy theorist and for being pro-Covid (whatever that means). And my words and images have been stolen and plagiarised which makes me greatly uncomfortable. So let me explain. I am not saying the guidelines in that blue post are false. In fact, I stated in my own post that they are taken directly from the CDC website. However, I do stand by my perspective that the image took some of the guidelines out of context and left out essential keywords. I am not anti-guideline. In factI’m pro whatever keeps kids and teachers and families safe. I am, however, 100% against the reckless sharing of that blue graphic. That graphic was shared out in a manner that screamed This is what school will be turned into! when the reality iswe have absolutely no idea what school will be like. For months speculation of what we face in the fall has developed into a true fear for parents and teachers and students. And that graphic took that fear and multiplied it into pure panic. And that is not okay. That graphic tells a partial truth and I cannot help but wonder if it was created to do just what it didcause panic. The reality is that yes, those are considerations established by the CDC. And yes they could be implemented in the fall. Or they might not be necessary at all (fingers crossed). States will use those guidelines to establish their own plan for re-entry to school and here in Arkansasthat has yet to be released. So those guidelines are just simply possibilities at this point. My purpose in drawing that red slash was not to incite an argument or make a political statement. Trust methis enneagram 6 will do anything to stay away from conflict. It was a simple plea for teachers to stop sharing that particular image and to hopefully provide a resource for teachers who feel overwhelmed and fearful. My goal was to be a simple voice of reason and to encourage teachers to just breathe right now and reach out if they need to. Again, the DESE and the Teacher Leadership Advisory Group have collaborated to establish a COVID 19 Hotline for teachers to express concerns and ask questions. I've also created a new blue graphic that I think better provides what we know about school right now. Feel free to share.
