Hands up ! to my friend and fellow permaculturalist , Javan Bernakevitch @ permaculture.bc for this his well researched and thought provoking doc. It is well worth the 20 minute watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Wh8NWgV7Kc&feature=youtu.be
" The forest was shrinking but the trees kept voting for the axe. For the axe was clever and convinced the trees that because his handle was wood he was one of them " West Asian fable #resist#grow#foodforestgardening
The hazards of bird feeding; contamination and disease . Prevent this by moving the feeder every week and washing it every week or ten days with a strong bleach solution.
Feeding fat for energy (suet)
Part two: bird feeding in the winter. Ducks have sharp eyes. It didn't take long....
Bird feeding in these cold climes in winter is important. Black sunflower seeds have the oil that helps give the birds energy. In our Osoyoos forest garden they also eat the seeds from the perennial and annual shrubs-basil seeds seem to be their favourite this winter, so it is helpful not to deadhead and "clean up" the garden in the fall. At our feeder there are the following birds on the endangered species list 1) Junkos 2) Red poll 3) Rose finch to name a few. It's predicted these may not be on the planet in less than 10 years. ( BC investigative biologists working for the UN ) In a food forest the biodiversity directly offsets this risk.
