She was recently recognized by Football Canada and was the recipient of the ‘Volunteer of the Year’ Award. Tim Enger, Football Alberta’s Executive Director said, It’s volunteers like Melissa who make our sport great. Her example of going above and beyond in 2020 is a great one . . . one we will always remember. According to Football Ca...nada, she took on a leadership role early in the pandemic, and put together a return to play manual that was approved by Alberta Health Services, and adopted by Atom, Peewee, and Bantam leagues. A graduate of Medicine Hat HS, Dan Federkeil was the only Team Alberta player to win a Super Bowl ring. He is arguably the most successful Alberta-born football player to date being the only one to win both a Super Bowl and a Grey Cup as a professional. While a Mohawk at Medicine Hat HS, he was a stalwart on both the offensive and defensive lines, winning the Rangeland League in all three years as well as advancing to the Provincial Tier II final in 2000. At the end of ...the his high school career, Federkeil played for Team Alberta when his hometown hosted the Football Canada Cup in 2001, and was a part of a dominant defence that only gave up 14 points the entire tournament on their way to a gold medal. Following that he joined the University of Calgary Dinos program and continued to excel with 111 career tackles, 20 for losses, and 13 sacks during his time there. This made Federkeil the FIFTH overall pick in the 2006 CFL Draft but he opted to sign instead with the Indianapolis Colts of the NFL as a free agent. During his time - four seasons with Indianapolis - he earned a ring when the Colts won Super Bowl XLI. Stepping back from the game after the 2009 season, Federkeil returned to the gridiron in 2013 with the Calgary Stampeders and was a starter on the team when they won the Grey Cup in 2014. He retired from the Stampeders in 2018 after an amazing career. #football #footballalta #footballalberta #teamalberta #playeroftheweek #week11 #medicinehat #highschool #danfederkeil See more

On this date in 1995, Peter Connellan was winding up an incredible career as a football coach. Starting out in Innisfail HS after graduating from the University of Alberta, Coach Connellan eventually made his way as a high school administrator and football coach in Calgary winning Division I Championships in 1967, 1969, and 1972 at Viscount Bennet HS. Connellan stayed at the high school level save for one season in 1977 when he took over on an interim basis the head coa...ching duties of the University of Calgary Dinos and promptly led them to a Hardy Cup Championship. Taking over the Dinos permanently in 1983, he had immediate success winning four of the next six Hardy Cups and three Vanier Cups in 1983 (31-21 over Queens), 1985 (25-6 over Western), and 1988 (52-23 over St. Mary’s). In the 1990s, Connellan continued with the excellence at the U of C winning three more Hardy Cups and capping it off in 1995 with a resounding 54-24 win over the Western Mustangs to win his unprecedented at the time Fourth Vanier Cup. Retiring after that victory, he was inducted into the Football Alberta Hall of Fame the following spring in 1996. #football #footballalta #footballalberta #halloffame #halloffamers #weekten #peterconnellan See more
