Spring has sprung which means we’re sharing the road! Remember most farm machinery only goes 40 km/h. It may take 5 minutes out of your day, but these tractors carry loved ones, hard workers, and the people who put food on our tables. We love our farmers.

Unfortunately, due to a conflict between the Ontario Government and the company who was administering our 50/50 draw, our 50/ 50 was drawn early and has ended. This was not the preferred end to this process for the Forest Fair but unfortunately it was out of our control. Again, we are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and we appreciate your support. The Forest Agricultural Society aka The Forest Fair

Today is a very important day for our country. The Forest Agricultural Society will never take for granted the sacrifices others made for our country. We thank all the men and women who are veterans and are currently serving. We also thank our local Legion. Although we can’t come together today, we encourage you to still take the time and remember the sacrifices made for our country and what it means to be a Canadian.

Today, we are sharing another Fair food-inspired recipe for the #historicrecipe: Apples on a Stick! This recipe is from the 'My Favorite Recipe' Cookbook, which... was published by the Sarnia Canadian Observer in 1936. This recipe book can be found at the Lambton County Archives! Apples on a Stick: Choose bright red apples. Wash and dry thoroughly and insert a wooden skewer into stem end of each. Prepare a glace sugar by boiling together two cups of sugar and one cup of boiling water until a little dropped in cold water is brittle. If using a candy thermometer, cook to 315 degrees F. Dip each apple into this boiling syrup having it in a small pan so that apples may be completely submerged. Stand apples on oiled paper to harden the glace. What is your favorite Fair food?

A regular feature at #LCArchives highlights stories from our collection. Today, we are sharing the story of the Forest Fair! The first recorded Forest Fair was ...hosted in 1870, at the corner of Broadway and Main Streets. The Fair moved to the Forest Drill shed the following year, and the current fairgrounds were purchased in 1909. The Forest Fair was well-attended by the local community. In the early days, many families depended on a horse and buggy for travel, and the Fair was likely the biggest event of their year. Livestock competitions were the main focus, but additional competitions for bread making, maple sugar and domestic arts were also held. The Forest Armories (later the Forest 'Crystal Palace') hosted exhibitions during the fair, but was also used by the Forest Blue Water Belles, the Forest Rugby Club, and was used as a training facility for soldiers in World War II. Additional buildings were added to the fairgrounds over the years, with the completion of the current exhibition building in 1982. The Fair was elevated from a Class 'C' to a Class 'B' Fair in 1983. We will miss the Forest Fair this year! This image can be found in the Forest Fair photo file at the Lambton County Archives. For more information on the Forest Fair or Lambton County agriculture, contact the Lambton County Archives! What is your favorite memory of the Forest Fair? We would love to hear your story!

Yet another post highlighting the important of Lake Huron and the historical significance of the fair!

Forest Fall Fair 02.06.2020

Fall fairs are rural gatherings showcasing the best of the best with respect to agriculture. Have you ever shown an animal in a Region 4 (4-H Ontario) show? Wo...n Best in Show for the yummiest pie or jam? Growing good crops and healthy livestock relies on healthy soil and clean water. This year, Lake Huron fall fairs are postponed, but still need local support. Look up your local fair boards/agricultural societies to see what kind of fundraiser projects are underway to keep these annual rural (and nostalgic!) traditions alive. The first photo is from 1910 at the Forest Fall Fair in Lambton Shores, one of the priority subwatersheds that the Healthy Lake Huron team focuses water quality efforts on.
