Sleep and Immune Health While health promoting strategies such as getting enough sleep have been promoted throughout generations, we now have the science to understand the role of sleep and our immune system. A study by Dr. Victoria Coleman, DC, helps to explain the role of sleep and the complications from sleep deprivation that occurs in our immune system:... chronic sleep loss increases inflammation AND promotes immunodeficiency leading to susceptibility to illnesses such as the common cold persistent sleep loss causes a chronic increase in pro-inflammatory cytokines the sweet spot for ideal sleep time appears to be 7-8 hours every night References: Dr. Coleman, Victoria (DC). Aging: Cognition Increases with Exercise Numerous studies have already produced evidence in regards to muscle strength, stability, and bone density, bit can exercise also help with cognitive decline associated with aging? A new study by Dr. Don Fitz-Ritson, DC, has uncovered some interesting findings:... aerobic exercise performed at moderate intensity and moderate frequency increases blood flow to the brain resistance exercise (also at moderate intensity and frequency) appears to improve the frontal cortex area of the brain exercise increases brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) which causes nerve cells to grow and causes changes in the brain similar to changes which occur due to learning BDNF has been found to be significantly increased after a SINGLE bout of exercise and chronic exercises increases circulating BDNF levels References: Dr. Fitz-Ritson, Don (DC). 2020 has seen a massive shift of people working from home as the world struggled with the COVID-19 pandemic. What was at first a temporary measure to help stop the spread of the virus, working from home has now become a way of life for a lot of us. But while our offices have been outfitted with various tools and equipment to prevent injury, most of us haven’t considered the repercussions of working full-time from our kitchen tables. Currently, there is data lacking on the imp...act that working from home has on safety and injury, but we do know that some important ergonomic considerations help to prevent and/or decrease symptoms, including: Adjust your chair and use your back support Adjust the position of your monitor so the top of the screen is at eye height and an arm’s distance away Adjust your position or your keyboard and mouse to elbow height Adjust equipment to keep your arms relaxed and wrists straight Use a document holder if referencing printed materials Ensure that there is enough room under your table for your legs If you are struggling with symptoms related to your home office setup, contact one of our qualified health professionals here at Forest Hill Physiotherapy & Health Centre. We can help you modify your workstation to optimize your productivity and reduce your risk of injury. These days it’s not uncommon to experience ongoing aches and pains in our shoulders, upper back and necks. And it’s largely because we’ve moved our office space to the couch and spend most of our days hunched over a screen. While stretching and exercise can also help relieve this type of pain, cupping is also extremely effective at opening up those tense muscles and bringing more blood flow and circulation to the areas. Cupping can be explained as a reverse massage. So, ...instead of pushing down on the muscles to try and loosen them up, we use the cups to lift the muscles and gently separate the little knots that build up over time of continuous tension. We’ve seen many patients (and read many studies) that have found cupping dramatically relieves their ongoing, stubborn chronic aches and pains. If you’ve got a kink in your neck, give us a call. We will get you fixed up with some cups that, yes, may leave some bruises (but hey nobody is heading to the beach anytime soon anyway) and will help relieve those ongoing aches. Are you feeling the effects of a stressful year? Stress harms both our psychological and physiological health. Acupuncture has been shown to be an effective way to manage stress and calm down our nervous systems, particularly during the resistance phase of our stress response. While the mechanism isn't fully understood, we do know acupuncture releases hormones (such as serotonin) that have an anti-depressant and anti-anxiety effect, regulate mood, modulate appetite and sexual behaviour, and generally make people feel good/happy Click the link below to read a journal study all about it! . #acupuncture #stressmanagement #stressrelief #foresthill #torontophysiotherapy
