You may have recently seen a lawn sign or a bumper sticker with the message Nova Scotia Needs Forestry on it, and wondered What does that mean? Weve been talking with our members and others involved in forestry, and got the feeling it was time to show a little pride in our sector together. Theres many reasons why people take pride in their connection to forestry: they may be small woodlot owners, may work for a mill, harvest maple syrup or Christmas trees, be involved... in silviculture, or own a business that works with a forestry businessthe list is endless. They wanted a way to show that pride. And so a simple phrase turned into a sign, a bumper sticker, a pin, and a t-shirtand now more and more people are asking how they can be a part, and show their pride and support for the sector. We hope youll join us in showing your pride and support for forestry call or email us today to find out how you can get your own sign, and join thousands of Nova Scotians who are saying Nova Scotia Needs Forestry. `

We know that outdoor classrooms are a great way to socially distance and learn about forest education! We love this outdoor classroom built by one of our members! Have a look at what WestFor Management Inc built out in New Germany! Share if you think your local school should have one too!
We have compiled all the services available for those who have been affected by the Northern Pulp Closure. Click the link below for more information https://forestns.ca///Forestry-Sector-Supports-LAE2020.pdf

Yesterday, an update was released on the work of the Forestry Transition Team. You can have a read through it here:
While we are concerned that the EA process has been paused, we hope the further engagement will help all of Pictou County and Nova Scotia move forward together.
We are blown away, sending a big thank you your way! When we started this fundraiser a few weeks ago we never could have imagined raising over $36,000 to support Lisa McCullys children. Whether you donated or shared the campaign, we want to thank you!... In the midst of all the tragedy happening in Nova Scotia, the forest families of this province have pulled together and made a huge impact! On behalf of the family, and all of us at Forest Nova Scotia - Thank you!
Wow - we have been absolutely blown away at the support this fundraiser has received over the past week! So far over $35,000 has been raised for Lisas children. This is the last week to contribute. If you wish to donate please click the donate button below. The fundraiser will close on May 8.
Forest Nova Scotia was saddened to find out in the last day that our Forestry Family was affected even further in the horrific events of April 18th and 19th in Nova Scotia. Joey Webber of Wyses Corner worked in the sector throughout his life. A family friend of Webbers, Darren Bezanson, spoke of Webbers involvement in the sector in a recent CBC interview: "Like his dad before him, Bezanson said Webber was a woodsman. He grew up around horses, since Webbers father ran a fo...restry business using horses, and also machines, for logging in the woods around their community." Our thoughts go out to the Webber family - especially Joeys wife and 2 young daughters he leaves behind. You can find a fundraising campaign set up by a family friend for Joeys family here:
Lisa McCully was a victim of the horrific events that happened here in Nova Scotia April 18th/19th. She leaves behind a grieving family, friends, coworkers and community. Most importantly, two young children are left without their Mom. Some in our Forestry Family may know that Lisa is the sister of Jonathan Kierstead - a friend and colleague to MANY of us from his time with Bowater Mersey and the NS Dept of Lands & Forestry. Its been almost 3 years since we lost Jonathan - ...and our Forestry Family has kept their ties to the Kierstead family. In the past few days some have been checking in on them, dropping off groceries...just lending a hand - and thats where we come in. Our members wanted a way to lend a hand and show their support for a family we know would be there for us. Its not about a goal for raising money - so thats why its set at $1. Its about giving our Forestry Family a place to honour the memories of Lisa and Jonathan...and help look after the family left behind.
In light of the effects of COVID-19 pandemic on people, businesses and Canada Post - we are extending the deadline to April 24th for the application form and fee payment for the annual Gas Tax Access Road Program. If youre a member of ForestNS, you would have already received your application form in the mail with your annual membership renewal. The offices of ForestNS are closed due to the pandemic - so please direct all questions to this email address: [email protected] or see the contact page on our website - forestns.ca - for direct staff email contacts.
Fire Ban in Effect - A ban on open fires is in effect to protect Nova Scotias forests during the COVID-19 pandemic. This ban will be in place until May 15.
You may have heard of the Special Move Permits that are available for the Forestry Sector. You can apply for a special move permit for wood or forestry equipment while the road closures are in place. To learn more about the permitting process, please contact the Province at 1-844-969-7737 or check out the link below!

Have you signed up for our Annual General Meeting yet? Its coming up! February 11-12 in Halifax, we hope to see you there!
We are deeply disappointed in todays decision by Premier McNeil. From the 30,000+ private woodlot owners, to the thousands of sector employees and forest professionals, there are many Nova Scotians connected to the forestry sector - and many of them relied directly or indirectly on Northern Pulp for their employment and family income. Those people - our forestry family - are what were thinking of most today. As a result of the Premiers decision, Northern Pulp Nova Scotia h...as indicated their mill will close. Todays decision by the Premier is deeply regrettable and will have a long and lasting effect on forestry in our province. Forest Nova Scotia will continue to advocate for our sector and hold the Premier to his comments/commitments to assist those affected by his decision, and to work with the sector to find new markets for our products.
Great day today! Thank you everyone for your support! This is definitely worth a like and a share! Nova Scotia Needs Forestry!
Tomorrow (Dec 19th) we will be a part of a rally for the forest sector at the Nova Scotia Legislature in Halifax. Join us at 11am - 1726 Hollis St. in Halifax to show your support for forestry workers and forestry families across this province. If you cant attend (and if you can), or if forestry is a part of your life, your family, your community - like this post, share it with your family and friends, and leave a comment of support for the people of the forestry sector. #NovaScotiaNeedsForestry
