I am pleased to announce that Formline Architecture | Chevalier Morales | Architecture49 will be designing the new Saskatoon Public Library. It's an honour and a privilege to contribute to the province of Saskatchewan, the site of my mother’s native heritage. This library will be a community space where oral tradition and the written word are combined, creating an inclusive and safe environment for sharing knowledge and ideas for all people.

What a story.. The City of Quesnel returning land at the confluence of the Fraser and Quesnel River to the Lhtako People where they traditionally gathered for over 2500 years to develop a cultural centre in partnership to showcase repatriated artifacts of the Dene and provide a 250 seat performance theatre the community needs. This is a model to reconciliation where all benefit and we are pleased to be the architects to facilitate their vision.

In our October cover story, Jim Taggart visits the University of British Columbias Indian Residential Schools History and Dialogue Centre, designed by Formlin...e Architecture: "Waugh also sought input from Elders of the local Musqueam First Nation, some of whom were residential school survivors. They spoke of their feelings of confinement and disconnection in those buildings, which afforded them only the occasional glimpse of the outside world through small, high windows. With the participation of survivors being a key to the Centres success, Waugh made openness and transparency a primary focus of his design."

Indigenous architecture and planning projects often need to respond to complex social issues. First Nations Highway of Tears projects are demonstrative of the... complexity of circumstances often encountered. The 720-kilometre (450 mi) section of Highway 16 between Prince George and Prince Rupert which spans British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Canada has become known as the Highway of Tears because of the disappearance of a large number of women, many of them Indigenous. There is little public transportation for the 23 First Nations communities which border the Highway of Tears, and women and children resort to hitchhiking to flee family violence. The high rates of violence against Indigenous women and girls have drawn widespread concern from national and international human rights authorities, which have repeatedly called for Canada to address the problem. But these calls for action have not produced sufficient change and Indigenous women and girls continue to go missing or be murdered. In 2006, Carrier Sekani Family Services released a report recommending a network of 22 safe houses for women fleeing violence be built along British Columbias section of the Highway of Tears. Construction has (finally) got underway for one safe house on the Woyenne Indian Reservation in Burns Lake to open in 2019. Designed by Alfred Waugh (Architect in Charge), Chipweyan of the Fond du lac Band, and Monika Kolonand at Formline Architecture, the safe house will provide temporary housing for up to 23 occupants in domestic style accommodation with support systems.
