Fort Dufferin 16.12.2020

Visitors to Fort Dufferin will now find a mound of dirt to the southwest of the interpretive centre. The mound will serve as the base for the replica of the officers' mess kitchen that will be constructed over the next couple of years. The original kitchen was built in 1872 and was 24 ft. 4 in. long by 18 ft. 3 in. wide. The walls were 10 ft. high with the overall height of the building 16 ft. 6 in. The building also had one brick chimney built on struts 7 ft. from the floor.

Going, Going, Gone With the help of the Emerson Fire Department what was left of the farm house was razed to the ground. This occurred on Sunday August 23rd. Prior to the fire, the job of salvaging the original Officer's Mess (west portion of the farm house) along with some of the farm house was completed. The site will now be cleaned up, the basement filled in and a mound of dirt constructed nearby to raise the site of the replacement building above the flood plain. As the officer's mess was located at it's original location, this location will be marked for future reference.

Fort Dufferin News The Post Road Heritage Group (PRHG) is a volunteer organization dedicated to the upkeep and promotion of Fort Dufferin. Over the past number of years, the PRHG has held Heritage Day at Fort Dufferin in early June, to promote the history of the site and as a fund raiser. Unfortunately, due to the uncertainty of the COVID 19 virus the PRHG has decided to cancel the event for this year. We hope to be able to bring it back next year bigger and better. The PRHG ...is in the process of putting up the signs along the walking trail and preparing the interpretive centre to reopen by June 1st. When visiting, please remember to practice hand sanitizing and social distancing. When on site you will notice that the PRHG is currently in the process of dismantling the old farmhouse/Officer’s mess. The farmhouse was moved on site in 1906 while the officer’s mess is original to the fort. The PRHG is hoping to salvage as much as possible from the officer’s mess as they move forward with the next project to rebuild that portion. As this building has deteriorated to the point of becoming a public safety issue, please stay away from this area for your own safety. Even though Fort Dufferin is a national historic site, it is not a funded site. As a result, the PRHG must raise its own funds in order to complete the projects. If you appreciate this site and would like to make a donation to help support our efforts donation can be sent to: POST ROAD HERITAGE GROUP, Box 71, Emerson, MB, R0A 0L0 See more
