Tiny sneak peek of the progess at the new clinic! More coming soon!

Fort Macleod Vet Clinic 25.05.2021

Meet Maple! She was found on the side of the road after being abandoned, she was very weak and thin. She was brought to Fort Macleod Vet Clinic where DR. Todd Baker worked his magic by administering IV fluid therapy, and antibiotics. She perked up a lot! And after lots of TLC by John & Christy she was then sent to Northern Lights Wolf Sanctuary in BC. Where she practically runs the place. As you can see she is doing so well and is very happy in her new home. We at Fort Macleod Vet Clinic are thrilled to be part of Maple's journey!

Meet Mark. A 7 year old Clydesdale, who works hard to help pull the public around Indian battle park. He was seen over a month ago, originally looked like a puncture to the right eye. A smear was done and confirmed a severe infection. A kerototamy was performed to help heal the ulcer, over the next weeks it spread and became ulcerative in spite heavy treatment. A biopsy was sent out and confirmed a Squamous cell carcinoma. His eye was removed to prevent spreading. He is healing up very nicely and will be back to work in no time.

What a difference 3 months makes!! Meet Dagul! When this sweet pup was born via c- section he was barely responsive and had Gastroschisis (some of his intestines were on the outside of his abdomen). The team fixed him up and sent him home with a guarded prognosis. But here he is, 3 months later and adorable as ever, as our pet of the week!

1 Week in. All this extra space is going to be so nice!

Fort Macleod Vet Clinic 01.11.2020

Meet Bailey, an 8 week old labradoodle pup who had a bit of a rough start. She was first brought in and treated for a skin infection between her legs caused by a suspected UTI leading to a constant urine drip. When that didn't clear up right away, Dr. Schlueter had a theory and ran some diagnostic tests to confirm. After some contrast dye and X-rays she found the culprit, an ectopic ureter. Dr. Schlueter and Dr. Baker got her right in the OR and were able to get her urinary tract back in working order. We're happy to report Bailey is staying dry and her skin infection has healed up nicely. Great work Dr. Schlueter! Pictures of a normal urinary tract and an ectopic ureter attached, as well as Bailey's before and after X-rays.

***2 confirmed cases of West Nile*** Just a heads up that there have been 2 confirmed cases of West Nile Virus at the clinic in the last few weeks. Please keep your horses protected by vaccinating your horses against WNV, using insect repellants, avoiding activities at peak mosquito times such as dusk and dawn, cleaning out water troughs weekly and eliminating as much standing water and tall grasses from around your yard as possible. Not all horses that contract WNV will show... symptoms but the ones that do can include listlessness, a change in demeanor becoming less active and isolated, reduced appetite, inability to swallow, drooping lips, muscle twitching, hypersensitvity, a lack of co-ordination, weakness in the limbs, partial paralysis or an inability to get up. A fever is not always present. There is no specified treatment for WNV but supportive therapy is generally given to those horses showing neurological signs. See more

We were happy to see these cuties in for their first set of vaccines today! Puppies require 3 sets of vaccines to protect them from diseases like parvo and distemper - these are nasty viruses that cause sickness and even death. Always check if your new puppy still needs its boosters when you take them home!

Foxtail foreign bodies are super common right now!! We've had at least one of these per day for the past few days... Three already this morning! Foxtails or speargrass awns like to hide in the back of your dogs mouth and tonsils and cause irritation, hacking, excessive swallowing and gagging so hard sometimes dogs will even vomit. We've also had a couple stuck in the nose (like both these ones pictured) which present as a sudden onset of excessive sneezing, snorting and face rubbing. If your dog is showing these signs get to a vet for prompt diagnosis and removal before they cause infection or migrate through other tissues!!
